A part near the tranny that seems to be leaking?,not sure what it is (pics inside)

So i called myself looking under the hood of my car the other day, only to see, WHAT looked like grease or somthing splashed around on the metal surrounds right above the LCA on the drivers side. It looks to be behind or right beside the tranny.

Does this look like a potential transmission issue?

Is this part that has a brown/dark bronze color a cv axle?

thanks for any assistance fellas, if its the axle, would it be better to replace the entire axle, or just replace the boot...although that boot doesnt look torn or anything

would not warrant a new axle, the seal is installed in the trans. it would just need to be replaced in the trans, probly relatively easy to even do yourself (ive never tried/needed to)

I bet you $20 that your dif bearings are on there way out............. Pop the axle out and see if there is any play inside the trans. At least you're lucky enough to live really close to another .org member who could rebuild it in his sleep

Where are the dif bearings located? now when you say pop the axle out, and see if there is any play in the trans, DOES this mean a potential tranny problem and would require a rebuilt transmission?
Would it be too much of a hassle to possibly get their user name?

It's not leaking to the point that its dripping onthe ground or anything...and i havent had time to jack to car up to touch it and see what color it is...but based on how it looks when i looked at it, im not even sure at this point..Ill probably jack it up after i get off work

kool, NOW WHEN YOU SAY......replaced in the trans, you dont mean I would have to partly disassemble the transmission do you? because if i do.....thats something id rather pay some one with more experience to do.

No, you won't have to dissassemble the trans to replace the seal at all, just a matter of removing the axle, same steps to inspect the differential bearing. However to replace them, yes you are correct, it would require a rebuild. Once the axle is out, take both thumbs and stick them inside by the splines and with your other fingers around the circular lip of the trans see if you can move the part with the splines up and down at all, you can also use a 1/2" extension or other suitable tool and stick it in there and wiggle up/down to see if there is any play. His name is dgeesaman, he's in harrisburg, pa I believe and he can't be more than an hour or two from you, if you need a rebuild or even help pulling the axle and inspecting for play and replacing the seal his experience and skill level is well worth paying for, as is mine if anyone in the mass area is reading this

Hey I'm kind of on the same boat. A Newburgh Nissan technician diagnosed my car with a leaking steering gear box after a free 28 point inspection they had going for a while. The rack had some kind of an oil and I saw it there while my car was on the lift at the dealership but nothing is leaking. Also, the power steering fluid has not decreased and my steering never gets hard (Something that should happen with a leaking steering gear box). The dealership wants $ 1200 from me but if it ain't broken why fix it? Where should I go from here?

Cool beans man, and just a tip, when you drive in the new seal just get it flush with the trans case, don't drive it in to far. Hopefully it's the rare case where the seal is leaking but the tranny is fine, I'm corssing my fingers for 'ya.

Above post: Maybe buy a jack and some jackstands and a digital camera? And take some excellent pictures like the OP did which helped us identify the problem. If you have a leaky rack then you're not really in the same boat as him are you?

true. Im pretty sure my steering rack isnt leaking. My tranny shifts fine though, the trans fluid doesnt smell burnt or anything, and its still a bright red looking color from when i had it flush approx 5 months ago...well its just a tad darker from when i got it flushed, but its still pretty red. Although i do get some notion of slight shift shocks when going from 2nd to 1st when slowing down to a stop..But thats always been there

hey wow guys wait, before you remove the axle don't forget to drain your tranny fluid! or you will have a "big" leak. Also looking at the pic I am 90% sure thats a seal leak, and thats what I would try first.

kool...im definately gonna remember that....do you have any suggestions on where i could get the seal at?

Or would it be best to stick with an OEM seal...IF a OEM seal is best, i shall give Dave B a call...If you guys suggest an Aftermarket Seal, which manufacturer is best

and to recap...the correct part im looking for is a "Axle Seal" correct?

get an oem seal. they might have them at your local nissan dealership, i think they are around like 10 bucks, so not sure how much you will save with dave. its a transmission seal, where the axle meets it, and tell them which side, and a vin # might help as well.

My steering gear box is leaking.

I have a leak (very little) more to the right (underneath) of the yellow arrow. How can I fix this without spending over a $1000?

Newburgh Nissan quoted me $1200 for a new steering gear box. Is there a cheaper way to fix this? There is gotta be a genius on this forum...show yourself

1) If you need to change your steering rack, buy a low mileage used one. $200 vs. $1200 = no brainer. When my steering rack went the steering got too easy and started to leak at the steering rack boot.

If you're just leaking fluid from near the reservoir, just tighten the hose clamps and/or replace the hoses. Remember to bleed the PS system per the FSM if you open and drain any of those lines.

2) Trurida, if you want to bring the car up my way (I'm between York and Hbg) I can take a look at it and see if it's the seal, diff bearings, or something else leaking. Based on your pics I'd say axle seal or diff bearings. It's rust colored because that end of the axle is plain steel and it always rusts, so you're not really seeing the color of the gear oil.

Kevin, thanks for the plug. I'm not sure I deserve all those accolades, but I do try.

Dave
