Missed shift..Went from 2nd to 1st....

Now I have a differential whine. Has anyone gone through this. Everything shifts the same....The whine is especially loud from 20-35mph when I'm barely on the throttle.

Any ideas of what it could be? Should I look for a used tranny....??

Is it gear or speed related. If its one gear its probably that gear, if it is speed you probably have a bearing, main shaft issue

I did the same thing about 6 month at high rpm and have also had a gear or bearing whine ever since. The car drives fine, no problems so far but the noise is bothersome because I know I F'd something up.

What rubber strap?

how the hell do you go 2-1 at speed? you must have the motto "if you cant find it, grind it" cause i have to rev-match to get into first at anything over ~15

i know how to drive a stick..i wouldnt mind driving a 6 speed, they seem like so much fun....BUT it would be HELL here in Baltimore, and i know it. This city is one of the most congested in the nation, in terms of car/highway or street ratio, and flow of traffic

hydraulic clutch FTW. makes driving in traffic so much more reasonable. i drive in >45 mins of traffic on the way to work (freeway only, i get a lot more in town, going to dinner or w/e else) and its really not bad. i can handle it easy. have driven a 65 C10 ( 3 on the tree) in traffic and its 10000X worse

I was running someone and shifted quick... I guess I hit it just wrong and it went in. First time this ever happened to me.

2500rpm^@45mph^into 1st gear=omfg the stress on 1st gear you must of bounced off the rev limiter acouple times.
Try a different gear oil for now,
Dont feel bad I went from 4th to 2nd in my old accord.7k^rpms.I almost went through the windshield.Traded it shortly after.lol be glad you didnt blow the motor.

Since it is speed sensitive it sounds like a main shaft bearing, sorry. I would run it until it craps on you or you need a new clutch. I may also try some lubeguard at lubegard.com, seed based lubricant.

For me it went right in. I pushed the clutch back in so fast I have no idea how high the rpm went

A lot of things can happen if you overrev a tranny. It's impossible to know what is damaged until you get the tranny removed, opened, and inspected. It could be as simple as changing the bearings, or may be more ugly like changing a gear and shaft because the high loads scored the sleeve bearing faces under the gear.

I did an accidental 3-2 shift a while back. I saw the RPM go to 8000. No real problems, no noise afterwords. This happened around 60K miles and at about 110K miles the tranny bearing went out and I did a compllete tranny job. I don't think they are related, or not very much.

For all of you who say that driving manual in traffic is a PITA, you don't know how to drive stick or how to put up with traffic. Drive like a truck driver. If you try to tailgate everyone in start-stop traffic of course you will go nuts. If you let them go and don't play the accordion game you will be OK, plus probably save your clutch. Worried that 'everyone will cut in front of me!'? Don't worry, who cares, lane hopping is usually slower than keeping a lane. Though knowing local patterns and selecting the optimal lane is possible. (e.g. shift left when on-ramps are comming, shift right when off-ramps are comming.)

You are on a uphill heading towards a red light? Coast up, in gear. You don't need to brake and you probably won't have to start from a dead stop. At a light and have a wait, put it in neutral, drop the clutch. On a hill too, use the parking brake.

Be courteous to others and appreciate those who are courteous to you. A thank you wave is nice. I will usually always let someone who uses their flasher in. No flasher, no help.

You won't hit the rev limiter when you overrev a motor. It's only there to keep the engine from spinning above a certain RPM under it's own power.
