Shift interlock questions
Shift interlock questions
Wifes 2000 Maxima GLE Auto. Sometimes the shifter push button does not depress even though foot is on brake (does not happen all the time).
The Chiltons mentions a Shift Interlock solenoid under the console but I have a few questions about it
If the solenoid was bad would I not have to override the interlock system fully, can a solenoid be bad only some of the time?
Is this a DIY? Part from Nissan only?
Searched and found messages that mention a relay by the passenger kick panel for older Maximas, does the 2000 model have this as well or is there only the solenoid?
Thanks in advance!

The solenoid can have an intermittent failure or the mechanism could be sticking with some sort of debris. Check to make sure it's all clean, get some brake parts cleaner and spray it down if it's gunked up.
It's an easy DIY, most likely the solenoid can only be had from Nissan directly but I haven't ever had to look for one.

Shows them for $80ish
