Hello all,

I checked in the archives and I found info that 35-45 mm was an okay range for the offset of a wheel for a 5th gen. I have an opportunity to get some wheels but the offset is 28mm. Does anyone have anything close to that? The wheels are 17X8. TIA.

RE: Wheel Offsets...

I know I am a 4th gen, but that makes no difference in this case. You need an offset of 35mm-40mm. 40mm is of course a perfect balance, however a 35mm offset should not affect the contact patch or ride. However, you do not want to go over the factory offset, because this may cause balance and contact patch problems. Just trying to help .

which makes the wheel's stick out farther, the 40mm offset or 35mm?

The higher the offset the more it sticks out. I can tell you my offset is 39mm and the front comes flush. 28mm to me would put it in way to far but that my thinking.

In a related thread from 2 days ago, I mentioned that the offset for the stock 17's is 45 mm. So you should be able to go to 45 without a problem on the 5th gens.

28 seems a little to low. It won't look all that great and it will affect the ride...

That's what i'm wanting, I don't like the way the stock 17's are so far inside.

Wheel Offset

Thanks for all the info. I think I'll skip the wheels for now since they are 28mm offset and most of you feel that is to little. Thanks again.

Actually, that's not quite right. The more positive the offset is, the more tucked in the rim will be. With zero offset, the hub mounting surface is even with the centerline of the wheel. Positive offset occurs when the hub mounting surface is toward the front, or wheel side of the wheel. Negative offset occurs when the hub mounting surface is toward the back, or brake side of the centerline. This is why some of the brake conversions (ie. 300ZX caliper conversion) will not work with the stock SE rims (45 mm offset). There is simply not enough clearance.

Look what I found . . .

http://toy4two.home.mindspring.com/offset.html

Pretty cool, huh? And it even defaults to a 7" wide wheel with a 45mm offset. You can't ask for much more than that.

Has anyone ever thought of puting a set of spacers on their rear wheels to get them out a little? I saw on the H&R site that they offer wheel spacers. Anywhere from 5mm -30mm I think. I was very interested in doing this, but I wanted some info first.

Re: Look what I found . . .

Definitely worth a bump since I'm trying to find offset info to clear teh fastbrakes kit.

using 16x6.5"40mm offset for a Maxima wheel and 16x7.5"45mm offset for a 300ZX rim shows 8mm of extra clearance. Along with their need to clear OEM 4 piston calipers, perhaps an easy choice to clear.

Kosei K1s I think come in 32mm offset in 16x7.5" giving 21mm of extra clearance.

Where's a nice, light, inexpensive 16x7" wheel in 35mm-38mm giving the same clearance as the 300ZX but the least amount of mass to hold 225 width tires?

Anyone know why Nissan used 225/50/16 on 16x7.5 on the 300ZX but 225/50/17 was fine on the 17x7 Maxima rims? Mazda went further with 225/50/16 on 16x8 rims on the last RX-7. Seems like overkill on the rim.

SCORE!!!

I just won an auction for a set of 17X8" 32mm offset SSR Integrals. I'm really excited because this suckers are forged (SSF) and only weigh 17.5 lbs in comparision to my 17X8" 50mm offset GS400 wheels that weigh 25 lbs.

I wanted to go with the 32mm offset since I'm running a 6mm spacer in order for my 50mm wheels to clear the Wilwood caliper (it just barely clears, thanks to the spoke design and lug nut type). The other day we test fitted Dave's 18X8? 42mm offset Axis Se7ens with the 6mm spacers. His wheels were even closer to the caliper than mine were but because of the lug nut type (acorn/tappered) there was only enough thread to turn each one 4 times. A wheel shop tech told us that you need a minimum of 5 turns. So either Dave will buy new wheels or have the wheels shaved 1-2mm.

So I guess I'll sell the GS400 wheels as soon as I get the Integrals on the car.

If I'm not mistaken, I think I read that Y2KEVSE has spacers with his 300ZXTT brake conversion and rims...
