It unscrews. But its a pain to get off. It has locktite in it. What you need to do is wrap the handle with a thick towel, then get a PIPE wrench and wrap it around the shifter. It will come loose. Mine did without hurting the stock one.

Does it screw off clockwise or counter?

Thanks, I remembered that but sometimes they thread
it backwards. I don't have a pipe wrench. I just used
a robogrip and that didn't work. Do you think you can heat
up the loctite or something?

Hey BlackMax2k1, you were reading my mind today. I was wondering the same exact thing. I am thinking about buying the AE shift **** (like the look and feel), and thought I'd mess around with seeing just how tight the stock one is on. Man, that thing is on there like a rock. I don't want to risk damaging the threads if that is likely to happen, so if anyone knows a good way of taking it off (saw through the **** ??) I would appreciate the help.

Later.
