If I get 17" rims (I have 17" stocks) and a set of tires that are not the same diameter as stock will it affect the mileage readings? Does something have to be modified or reprogrammed or something?

I want new tires but Nissan made up that stupid tire size and I want a more versatile rim. I was hoping to order them in a package deal and just throw them on.

BTW Nissan says that changing the rims voids the warranty (!) which is why I want to keep the stock rims with the stock tires, so I can change 'em when I need warranty work.

as long as the total diamter of the wheel is within a couple percent of the stock wheel, the speedo will be off by a negligible amount.

If you want to make comparisons, try this :

http://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

it will give differences in diameter and %speed.

Who at Nissan said changing rims will void the warranty, and what part of the warranty would it void?

I called the dealer and he said he wasn't sure but it might void the warranty. He told me to call the 800-nissan1 or something to double check. So I did, and the representative said,"Yes, changing the rims WILL void the warranty." Which part I don't know.

So there you have it. Unless he was BS-ing me.

Really, does anyone have problems with speed descrepancies when changing the tire size and rim? Or do you just cope with the speedometer and mileage being off?

BS!!! Changing the rims can not void any warranty BY LAW! To refuse warranty service it must be proven in writing that the modification or aftermarket part caused a defect. If you go in saying that there is something is wrong with the engine, they can not say that it was caused by the wheels. If they do, they must prove it.

Yeah UMDs right, isnt it true for most mods? That they have to prove that the mod caused the problem to void the warranty.

I heard on a Honda board that since rims may screw with your suspension, that suspension parts can been considered voided, but does Nissan even warranty that stuff? I wouldn't worry seriously about it though. My dealer tried telling me that the FSTB voided my entire warranty. But that was only after the visit where they tried to say the OSCAI did it...and the problem wasn't anywhere close to either mod, it was the freaking tranny they were trying not to fix.

That's my question as well, VeggieH8R. Call NNA back and ask them precisely what part of the warranty would be voided by changing your rims. Then let us know what you find out. If it sounds like BS, I'll run it through my contacts at NNA for a second opinion.

I called Nissan again and the rep said changing the rims would void any warranty on parts directly affected by (or even close to) the wheels. Knowing the dealer, they'd probably blame anything that went wrong with the car on the wheels.
