I have a 5 yr bumper to bumper warranty, but i want to add a CAI, and y-pipe. I know it will void my warantee, so i have a question. If something goes wrong in my car later on, will i be able to take the y-pipe and the CAI out, and put the orginal parts back, just to take to the dealer, and when he is done, put everything back together? Will that work.

Some dealers do not mind. It is my feeling that most do mind however. It's on the dealers burden to prove your modification caused a problem. It doesn't work that way most of the time though. Many people are just told that their modification caused the problem and the repair is not covered under warranty. You can fight that though, but FIGHT is the key word. If you are concerned, I would go with the the Stillen hi flow intake. It's easier to remove and reinstall. The Y pipe is difficult to remove and reinstall for short term situations. Either don't buy it or leave it on and take the chance.

A dealer will probably give you trouble over a CAI and y-pipe. But like you said, if you take them off and then go in for service, they can't tell....

Hmmmmm

Well it actually depends on how cool your dealer is. There are some of us that can leave certain mods on the car and take it in for service without any hassels. On the other hand, there are some of us that are getting treated horribly by Nissan's fine customer service and having normal (un-associated with the mods) warranty work get rejected due to "the mods caused it" syndrome. Be ahead of the game and take the "major mods" off before you go in. Then put them back on after.

You are wrong. It does not void your warranty.

How many times do we have to say it on this board?? THe only way you can have warranty service denied is if they can prove that the mod caused the problem.

I do agree with the others, though, that you make life a lot easier if you have a cool service manager, and check with them before each mod, to make sure they're cool with it.

Best thing to do is schmooze any of the techs or service writers at your local Nissan dealership. I did when I first got my Max and one of the techs has a modified 98 Max and hit it off. We started a club down here in San Diego about a year ago and he gets his customers to join the club as well as Maxima.org. He has also installed my intake, Y-Pipe, rear sway bar, springs, and all of my recommended services...

True. You tell the dealer about the Magnuson-Moss
Warranty Act and they'll laugh. If you want to fight the dealer through litigation, you may win. All I'm saying is that avoiding the situation can be less work than fighting the dealer. It's really up to the dealer though. Some of them are fine with mods. Mine isn't one of them. They flipped out over my cone intake.

Let me clarify that the warranty problems come into play when you have a problem with the related system. If you throw check engine lights and the diagnostic shows it's the MAF sensor, you may have dealer warranty problems, due to your PR CAI intake. They might claim you damaged the MAF sensor during the installation. If you have a problem with your shock absorber, they can't say the MAF caused it.

How about if i do some eletrical work, such as put in a navigation system with upgraded audio system. Will it void the waranty?

Not unless you had electrical problems related to it.

Your warranty is "void" if you don't comply with the terms in the warranty booklet. For example if you never change your oil you can't fight for an engine problem later on. This problem is not Nissans fault. The warranty covers defects of Nissan's materials and workmanship for the specified period of your warranty.

Well, I guess you can look at is as you can't "void" your warranty, the warranty is always there, but then it becomes a case of was this defect caused by nissans materials/workmanship or your y-pipe, stero, etc......

If you supercharge your engine it may be impossible to tell what caused your engine problem, "voiding" your warranty.

Bottom line... I agree that some dealers will refuse to do warranty work because people do not know their rights!
