Ya...another freaking TCM question :)
#1
Ok guys..my worst nightmare with my Max was
confirmed...I found out that my 4/00 built Max has
the old TCM in it, part # ending in Y100.
I think I have only been able to get it to exhibit
this "slip" behavior once but I'm not sure due to
it raining out(may have spun the tires) I gunned
it to get on the highway and when it shifted into
second, there seemed to be a dead air delay for
about 1/2 a second. Sort of like a
whaaaaaaaaaaa(shift into second)dead air whaa.....
I for the life of me cannot recreate this problem
other than I can sure as heck tell the difference
between a 1st to 2nd shift and a 2nd to 3rd...(bit
crisper)...so........
I see that quite a few people had their TCM's
replaced. I also noticed that a few of you were in
the same boat as me, ie could not make the car
exhibit the problems for the dealer but they still
agreed to replace it for you.
What did you do to make this happen? I want to
make sure if I need to go to another dealer that I
have a good reasonable explanation on why I feel I
need the TCM replaced.
Oh yeah..one other question...one of the ways I figure I can tell if their is a prob with the TCM is to go back to the dealer and ask to test drive one of the newer 2K Max's that were delivered in August(I assume that thses ones have the newer TCM)
Think they'll let me do it? I figure I should maybe feel the difference and confirm my suspicions on at least the soft shift

well... if you want your car fixed before its broke...
you have to argue the letter of the TSB, not the spirit of it. Or something like that
Here's my dealings with it.
Dealer 1:
ME: There's a TSB out, please look at my car.
DLR1: We havent seen it.
ME: Well, it could make my tranny burn up the clutches
DLR1: Is it slipping?
ME: Well, I think so, not sure
** right here, I'm screwed **
DLR1: Nissan doesnt do preventive warranty work BLAH BLAH BLAH
ME: *ARGUE*
DLR1: *BLAH* *BLAH*
ME: {leave looking like an ***}
Take about 1 1/2 off work and drive over to another dealer.
Dealer 2:
I approach the service writer with TSB in hand.
ME: I called about my tranny slipping.
DLR2: Oh yeah, slipping you say?
ME: Slipping... I'd have to say its most likely this TSB. Have you seen this?
DLR2: No.. but we'll look it up real fast.
ME: Ok, well I called ahead so I could schedule a test drive with a tech, is he ready?
DLR2: No, and its going to be a few mins.
** prolly the important part here **
ME: Ok, but DONT DRIVE MY CAR WITHOUT ME!!! I dont want the tech redlining my car to replicate this w/o me in it. The delay only occurs under very heavy throttle and I dont want my car dogged, plus the DELAY doesnt occur everytime, I want to test drive long enough to replicate the DELAY.
*note the use of the word delay here, not slip - they will see the delay* I also want to see how much damage might have already been caused, I'm sure the tech will know that right?
DLR2 agrees and drives my car out of the service bay. I wait 20 mins.
DLR2 brings my car up to the out bound lane of the service bay and says "the tech actually parked your car out back to get it off the line. He saw the delay then, you definately need the TCM."
I declined the test drive with them as I had the TCM now.
Ok, so it seems that my choice of words and not the test drive did the most good here. They didnt take it off the lot as I had a birdseye view of the front. They basically took it about back and drove it about 200 feet and decided.
I hope this helps you.. good luck...

Well Tim, I did this today........
after I made my post I was reading over some paperwork that I have on the car and one of the sheets it stated "If for any reason whatsover that you are not satisfied with our Service Dept, please contact(General Sales Manager) I figured what the hell? Might as well do some *****ing...being nice and agreeable with these people ain't getting anything done. When I bought the car I did have a nice long chat shooting the breeze with him about everything under the sun so why not give it a try?
I drove into the dealer and asked to see him...he was off (Sunday) so I said fine and started to leave thinking I'd take it up tomorrow. Half way out the lot I turned around and decided to ask about driving a newer Max to compare the trannys. I explained the salesguy that I wanted to drive a Max made in May, June or July.(Lot was full of Max's delivered in July and August) As I'm explaining why I wanted to do this another salesguy pipes up "problem right around 18-21 miles per hour?" Well it sounded like he at least had an inkling of what I was talking about...I didn't answer his question directly but said "Yea the problem with 2K TCM's shifting from 1st to 2nd" While all this was going on the 1st salesguy said all he had were Max's built in March...."Yeah Right" Told him I bought mine in June, car was delivered in May and made in April.
He just looked at me...at this time another guy comes over because I guess my voice was carrying thru the dealership on a real slow day(I was the only customer in there) "What seems to be the issue here?" Turns out he is the General Manager, the top dog! I start explaining the issue to him and he asks me to come into his office. Well since I had the GM's ear I decided to unload on him(not voice wise) but everything I have had problems with the car. I brought up all the rattle problems and stated that I didn't like to gripe over such minor issues. He said they were not minor and there shpuld be no rattles at all. I told him that I needed new engine mounts on my new 2 month old Max. He seemed suprised by that(wouldn't you?)
I then explained all about the TSB to him and the symptons that I have noticed...the rpm jump once while accelerating on the highway, and how on Friday night I was in Boston's North End(real narrow streets) and I had to gun it to beat a truck coming at me to get around a parked car...rpms moved but the car never really sped up until a second or two..then it screamed and I almost went too fast into the back of another truck He didn't know about the TSB but he was writing down everything I was saying. I lamented about how the tech said he would not change the TCM unless he could recreate the problem. I also stated about how Nissan worded the TSB....delayed shifting or slippage and how they covered their asses by instructing the techs to "verify that slipping is occuring". I also hopefully got his ear by saying that I bet you when I bring it in the tech will not detect the slippage as it is too random...which is the God's honest truth!
He said he would talk to the service manager in the morning about resolving my issues...I told him the service manager was in the same room when I was crabbing about the TCM and did not interject at all. Hopefully this won't kill me when I bring the car in for my mount replacement.
I think I basically told him that since day one that I've had the car I've been beset by rattles, bad squeaky engine mounts, and now worries about my tranny. I'm hoping that my car has had enough issues that he may tell the SM to order the part just to a)shut me up or b)he realizes that I am really unhappy with the service I'm getting (6 visits to the dealer in 2 months)
arrghh I think I maxed out my bandwith.......
Thanks for listening

odds are you just bought yourself a new TCM
that was the perfect approach. Screaming a-holes get nowhere at the dealership. Those people are desensitized to it.
I would imagine you'll get it. good luck.. damn shame it has to be this hard for something you deserve anyway..
