Now it’s my turn for a dumb question: Should the automatic climate control be turned off before shutting down the engine or just left on all the time? I’m thinking in terms of a possible strain on the starter motor and battery because the A/C compressor may be engaged while the engine is restarted.

I think it's fine to turn your car off with the climate control running, but i habitually turn off everything (stereo, a/c, etc.) before turning the car off.

I've had startup LAG but the car has never *failed* to startup. But I usually turn the A/C off before shutting down. The radio and stuff I don't think affects it as much.

Climate Control

I usually turn off the climate control. Or atleast blow out all the cold air on a hot day. This helps in keeping down on the funky smell you get. Living in Dallas, if you leave the air on full blast and turn it off - let it sit there all day - and then turn it back on - watch out for the smell !!!
