i comming down 1&9 and notice a late model talon flying through traffic behind me,i downshift to 3rd before he gets passed me and matches his speed than i floor it as does he.i only have about 2ft or so on him when i hear a blowoff valve,i try to go into 4th gear but it just would'nt engage ,of course i've already lost at this point.this shifter sucks sometimes ,has anyone cut thier shifter ,is this more cost effective than buying a shorter shifter,or kit and does redline oil get rid of this problem?

I've got a stillen sts shifter on my car and I love it! Once you put a sts on your car you will wonder why you didn't have one on the whole time. I haven't dropped in the Redline yet so I can't comment on that. Missing a shift happens to everyone (with manuals..duh once in a while so no worries. If he was stock you would have beaten him easily.

Well, a stock turbo talon runs 14.6 in quarter mile. So he won't beat him easily but maybe about the same or just by a bit. If the talon was modded then byebye Maxima.

Even a GSX has become a victim, several stock, a few that had simple intake, hardpipe w/ BOV, and exhaust.
One I caught on a roll had the above mods and FMI. I sprayed, but a modded one would run a 14.6 probably.
I have plenty of witnesses from DPA @ "Industry."
14.6 is for the AWD model which the magazines probably did a clutch dump at 4k to keep it at boost range. I'm not doubting that you can beat a eclipse/talon since there's really no point on lying and you're a knowledable guy. Great runs !

Well I was in my buddies GTI VR6 (when he was stock) and he beat the Talon Turbo (the new heavy body style) to 100+ from a dead stop. Third and fouth gear with Quansung's mods he would pull away from the Talon (if he was stock) easily. His Max is pretty maxed out with bolt on mods so I'm sure his car is pretty quick especially on a roll. One thing I don't understand is why people bring up magazine 0-60 and 1/4 times when the issue is a race on a roll? AWD makes a massive difference in both 0-60 and 1/4 and in this case they were already at the top of third so all those mag times really mean jack. Not flaming just commenting.

Oops, my bad.
It was 14.9@91.6mph in MotorTrend June 1994 issue. I messed up the 6 and 9. In that case, then the Maxima is faster. I apologize for my mistake.

It was a 2g. They were testing when it just came out. I think it was an Eclipse GSX.

Short throw shifter

I just got my SMC Short Throw installed and I love it. I got the SMC because it is adjustable. I like the way it shifts now but....it is not going to fix missed shifts....probably make it worse. I kind of liked the way it was stock because the shifter would simply slide into gear....but with the SMC at the shortest throw you need to man handle the shifter with the palm of you hand rather than with you finger tips.

Don't get me wrong.....get the short throw and man handle that SOB!!! You will like the results. If you get the SMC....just cut a big hole in your heat shield. DO NOT let anyone tell you to adjust it half way at first.

I got mine at www.custommaxima.com. $120.00 (Includes shipping). Be expected to wait a month.

Re: Short throw shifter

I agree the shifting is much more stiff. You get use to it after a while but you can still miss shifts especially when trying to shift quickly but not totally concentrating. After a while you get use to, it gets worked in and you can finger tip shift(with a lil more effort than with stock shifter The SMC is cheaper than the stillen and more adjustable from what I understand. I don't think I had a hole cut in my heat shield though? I will have to double check. The stillen sts is made of billet steel (from what they say) and is the same height as the stock shifter. If the shifter was any shorter I would find myself banging my elbow on the elbow rest especially if the rest was in heightened postion. To wait a month seems crazy to me but the price is right. The stillen is probably low $200's

Another note about STS's. The SMC adjusted to the shortest shifts possible will make the shifter pretty low. I would say that it is at least 2" shorter than stock. If you use the armrest in the up position you will be bumping your elbow. I also had to move the seat up a hair so that I could reach the shifter without stretching.

Phatguy...did you do the install yourself? I had mine done at a muffler shop and it took about 30 minutes. I cut the shield because I didn't want to have any probs with the convertor hitting the shield and making noises. When I was looking at the shifter assembly I noticed how easy it would be to move the shifter back towards the armrest. I also though about bending the shifter back about 1". That one inch would make a hell of a difference.
