Depends, do you want luxury and style, or just a car that goes fast, but is not that classy? I have not had the time to get out and test drive the new Altima. But, it seems everybody that has loves them. It is an entirely different car than the Max. Maximas are classier and extremely well built.

The 2k2 maximas are much better IMO then the altimas.
But remember this you can get great deals on 2k1 fully loaded right now.
Its like they are giving them away.

I tested out the 2k2 Max yesterday at the meet on Long Island (at smithtown nissan).. I have to say I love the 2k2 Maxima.. but the 2k2 Altima has decent looks and a good engine.. with the 5speed it should be a quick car as well.

I'd just save some more money and get a 2k2 Max.. the engine is even smoother than the 3L.. if you can imagine that

I would look at either a 02 Altima or 02 Maxima...but skip the 01 Max. You should be able to find 01s at 500-1000 under invoice and 02s at invoice to 500 over. The 02s have equipment standard that was optional on 01s...so effectively, the 02s are cheaper the 01s equally equiped.

I definitely agree. That's why they've discounted the '01 Maximas so much. It appears like a better deal, and that's part of the allure. Not to mention that people who bought the '01 would have a fit if they saw discounts down to 2k below invoice.

I just finished viewing the Nissan website, and wow--the '02 models look fantastic! I'm REALLY very impressed by the new Altima. Definitely worth a test drive. I'm curious to see how it stacks up to the Maxima in quality, ride, road handling, and acceleration.
