is it 6 3/4? or 6 1/2? if its 6 3/4 will 6 1/2 fit?

I believe it's 6 1/2, however there is a bracket that the stock speaker sits on that needs to be removed and applied to the new speaker so that it fits properly. Check the Sticky: How to thread at the top. It might have something in there.

good question. the org member seem to talk about 6.5 but the crutchfield table gives 6.75
i personally have no clue.

Just replaced my speakers a few days ago. Standard audio system stock speakers are 6.5" made by Clarion. (I don't know if it's any different for Bose) Supposedly you can use the 6.75" but I have not tried it. 6.5" is the most common size anyways. I reused the stock brackets with some modifications and it fits just fine.
Advice - pick some good speakers; I had to replace my stock speakers because they were shot so I got the Pioneer TSG1641R and thought they would be about the same as the stock speakers but they don't even come close, the bass is non-existent.
