Here is how I understand the governor information on the Maximas. With the general forum down, I'll post here and on the 4th generation board.

3rd gens: no governors on any of them, SE or GXE
-personal experience
-Car & Driver 1992 SE @ 138

4th gens: no governors on SE or GLE, but the GXE is governed at 112, correct?
-neighbor at 135 in 97 GLE

5th gens: autos governed at 132 mph, but 5 speeds no governor and were rated with a top speed of 143 mph.
-Russ topping out at 132 in his 2000 SE auto.

If anyone could clarify this information or supplement it, I would appreciate it. I will be adding this to my FAQ's very soon. What will the status of the 2002 Maximas, which all will have 260 hp be? Will they be governed at all?

In no way do I plan to test the limits, but was just curious. Thanks

Really? Cause my friend has a 96 GLE and topped out at 140 w/ no governor, but I know that a 98 GXE has a governor. Don't know what he topped out at, but installed a speed meter in his car to get around it.

Yeah, I really want to know something about this also. I got a 97 GXE, and I could go to 120MPH. But after that, I think I couldn't go faster further.

well some of them have the c&c package... those ones have no speed limiter. usually the gle's and se's have them, but i guess there have been a lot of cases where this isnt the case.

How does it top end?

Of those who have tried to top-end their Max's... how did it feel? Did it just "stop going"? or was there a complete drop in power and then re-surge, like hitting the RPM limiter in lower gear?

The cars (not Max's) I have driven to their governors' limits feel like they hit the RPM limiter, but well short of red line in top gear, at 100-110 MPH... keep it floored and these cars "oscillate" back and forth about 5mph. There doesn't seem to be much point in having a governor limit at 132 mph when the "theoretical" max speed (stock) is only about 8 mph faster, and that's a good 32 mph faster than many other manufacturer's impose!

I've not top-ended my 2k1 GXE yet, I've only seen 125 or so. Didn't feel a governor kick in, I just didn't want to keep my foot in it!

I have half a mind to ban everyone in this thread who posted about how fast they've topped out.

Please note the long-standing rule (since 2003 at least) in the 5th gen rules section:

* Street-racing, kills, and reckless driving threads are not allowed.

"I did 145 on a public road" is considered reckless driving.

I'm not going to ban anyone this time, but next person who posts a thread like this OR posts IN a thread like this will get a month off. No exceptions.
