'02 6-speed **** fit perfectly..>

My anniversary edition **** was not doing so good. The metal center was lifting just enough to cut my hand when shifting so I decided to get the 2002 6-speed shift ****. Theads on perfectly and the only thing I had to do was raise the shift boot about 1 inch to fill in the gap because the new **** is smaller. To raise the center of the shift boot I pulled up the center console and used electrical tape around the shift rod so the boot will not fall. Looks pretty sweet and I'll have some pictures tomorrow if interested.

I ended up getting the **** from Tustin Nissan because they were the only ones that would order it for me. I think it was $75 well spent. I know what you thinking about the 6-speed markings and someone making the mistake of shifting into 6th but no one drives my car so problem solved. :^)

Naaa, 6th gear is over rated. If 5th gear is good to 145 plus mph then what's 6th good for? Warp speed? If figure your car is drag limited at the top of 5th gear so why even install a 6th gear? Who truly knows but it's a sales gimmick that seems to be working.

Very true. 6th gear is basically just a crusing gear that puts less stress on the engine.

i would think closer ratios for the lower gears means faster acceleration, and cruising in 6th may offer better gas mileage.

My 5 speed **** is all leather. Isn't the 6 speed part metal? How does that feel better than leather in hot/cold weather?

"most" cars that utilize 6-speed manual transmissions have 4 close ratio gears and two overdrive gears, basically most 6th gears are just for fuel economy and sound deadening. The 6-speed max's first four gears are probably about the same ratios as the old 5-speed, but the bigger engine will eat more gas with only the 5th gear...hence the 6th

Re: Re: Re: Re: COOOOL!!

Actually I read that Nissan orignally just wanted to change 4-6th. But they eventually decided to make the maxima 6-sp a true close ratio tranny. So I think the first 5 gears are underdriven and only 6th is overdriven. Since the new maxima is 255hp, it probably has the power to utilize all 5 underdriven gears now.
