Gas Mileage bad on 5th. Gen?
My Max is only one year old but I can never, for the life of me, get more than 310 miles to a full tank of gas. Mostly though, I average about 280 miles. I always fill up on premium, don't do shotgun starts that often, don't race, and I do most of my driving on the highway. Since I live in Hawaii, most of my driving is done with the air conditioner on but don't think that this would make such a difference. Some of my other friends that have the same car, can get almost 400 miles to a full tank doing the same thing. Is the amount of miles that I get normal or is something wrong with my car? Please post how many miles you can get on a full tank. Thanks.

I think your car needs a check up
Dude, 280 miles to a tank. I drive like a mad man and still get 350+ usually with AC blastin. Something is definitly wrong. Before you go to the dealership, take out all your loose change Theres been a rash of change theivery going on lately. Funny, I thought those mechanics got paid good

but i've noticed that some people are just getting terrible gas mileages while others are getting good mileage...i guess it depends on how you drive, but some cars just sip more gas than others..even among the same cars.

This may be a dumb question,
But I wonder if it has to do with Emissions controls? Nissan has Cali cars stroon all over America. Could it be that Cali cars get better gas mileage. Probably not, but maybe a theory to look into. I have a Cali spec car and get around 23-24mpg. Anyone else?

Depends
On your driving. I do so much weird driving (G/F lives 2.5 hours away and I do the drive about every other weekend.) But during the week, it's lots of city driving (Short city driving) then other times, it's long drives into the city.
Anyway, long story short, you're going to see such a wide range depending on your driving style and where you're driving. I've NEVER gotten less than 20mpg, but at times, I've been at 30mpg (Non-stop to Ohio from Philly)
Total mileage also depends on when you fill-up - I'm not a fan of letting my fuel pump suck up any crud at the bottom of the tank, so I try to fill up at 1/4 tank. So, you're better off figuring out what your MPG is anyway instead of totals. If you're under 20, then I'd DEFINITELY say there's a problem.

I used to only get about 15-16mpg on my auto 2k1 gxe, all city driving in San Francisco. If I really pushed it with a full car, I got 14.5mpg once.
Nothing wrong with my car I don't think, i'll get 27 from SF to LA.
The auto transmission on the Maxima isn't very efficient

I hardly ever let my tank drop below 1/4. Like someone said already, figuring out your mpg is better. I keep track of my mpg with every fill-up. I have ranged from 18 to 32 mpg, but average out around 22mpg.
The 32mpg was an anomoly since I filled up in the mountains and cruised mostly downhill to my next fill-up (but I was still flooring it regularly to pass people). The 18mpg was from a combination of downtown driving (with construction delays) and "spirited" driving.
I am using Imperial gallons which makes the mpg numbers look better than using U.S. gallons. My maxima brochure uses imperial gallons so I believe that's the correct gallon to use. The 2001 Maxima tank holds 15.4 imperial gallons so at 22mpg I should get 338.8 miles to a tank. With your 280 miles per tank that works out to about 18mpg.
The brochure says we should get 23mpg in city and 35mpg (yeah right) on the highway.

I've actually been lucky enough to get 3 500 mile tanks on various trips ive taken. the key that ive found in doing this is if you keep the speed at 70-75 mph and dont stop for a rest or food it can go over 500 miles. but ya see i'm single so when i go on a road trip, its only me who says when to stop good luck to you married guys with kids

I have a Cali spec (yeah, here in VA) 5-SPD, been getting 23.xx mpg lately. new (a year ago), i was getting 20-21mpg. 99% driving is around town. probably drive a bit faster than your average.
overall average (life of car) is 21.68mpg.

A/C absolutely makes a difference... I can go almost 4 or 5 days more between fillups since it's turned cooler and I've stopped using the A/C!!
Speaking of gas, any good additives to use or stay away from to clean fuel injectors and such, or are all those additives useless?

bare-bones 2K GXE 5 spd getting 350 miles on gas tank, refill when light comes on about 14.5 gallons, that makes 14.5 gallons per 350 miles. I drive mostly on highways, and I think economy could've been better given the different 5spd gear ratio...at 70mph engine is revving at about 3500RPMs that makes the engine to consume gas. For me the city driving and A/C doesn't make much difference, take off 30mi/tank, non-stop hwy trip can get 370 tops. Any tips on how to decrease the gas consumption?

DAMM!! Some of you guys are getting close to 500miles per tank?? ****
I usually drive very nicely (90% of the time) and the car usualy shifts at 2k or slightly higher. I struggle to get anything more than 300 miles out of a tank. My car has 11k on it, synthetic oil, and OSCAI. What the hell is wrong with my car?

What are you talking about? My 5 speed max is taching 3000 RPM's at 73 MPH. I get around 23-24 City and almost 31 on the highway and i drive my max like an a$$hole. i never go less than 120 in short spurts on the highway and i redline the car out of lots of stops, but i have still not ever seen close to 500 miles on a tank. My best is about 410.

Off this tank of gas, I'll be lucky if I get 280 miles. It's only 1 year old, have around 28k miles on it and I still have trouble getting it past 300 miles. I did one time, got 310 miles but I never sped above 55mph. and drove with my air conditioner off. Can someone please tell me what the problem might be? Thanks.

I rarely get over 300 per fill up. When I switched from premium 92 to cheap 87 octane, I actually got around 350 miles between fill ups. Almost got to 400 a couple times. But I switched back to the super stuff because of what you all said on the forums. So I'm back to around 300miles\tank. Mostly Highway driving, somewhat aggressive style.

sorry..you're right, at 70 MPH is about 3000RPMs..which is still high for such a large engine. When I bought my car I thought smthg is wrong with this. And yes, I doubt you can squeeze out 500 miles from the tank (premium gas only.) If you tried to keep your RPMs under 3000 at all times you'd have gotten maybe 450 out of tank

Let's be Consistent
I think the biggest problem with the huge differences in milage that people are discussing in this thread is that almost nobody is saying whether or not the total milage they are getting from their Max's is when the needle hits empty OR when the tank is truly almost empty. I find that my low fuel light pops on when there is still nearly 4 gallons of gas left in the tank. So, those filling their tanks when the low fuel light pops on could never dream of getting 500 miles out of a tank.

well.... when I was still communiting for work... I can get about 400+ but since you stated that you are running a/c a lot.. well.. this past few days... dad is in town.. so I drove around with A/C on... I am on my 3/4 mark.... I am at 310...(all highway miles) so would suggest you go back to the dealer and have them check it out..

I'd have to say that my 2k 5spd has the most inconsistant economy. I average around 400 miles on each tank (I use super from Hess). Believe it or not out of all the stations in my area (NJ) Hess gives the best mileage. I'm not crazy...it is the best (and the cheapest). I only put super in. Mobile is a close second followed by Amaco. I've put ultra 94 in (sunoco I think) and I only got 325 out of the tank (I wasn't beating on the car either).
Try switching fuel companies.

You guys are lucky. I got the 02 SE and i average 18.1 mpg on mostly city driving with occassional highway cruising @ 70 - 80mph and hovering on 2800-2900rpm.
The thing that irritates me the most though is that the trip computer keeps saying i'm averaging 21.5 mpg (and i reset it everytime i fill-up) even though i'm not. (How do i know? I divide the total miles i made since the last trip with the amount of gas i pumped in and i get the 18 number)
Just hit 1700miles today.
