Yeah, I know this belongs in the stereo thread but nobody goes there...can anyone help me here?

Had my amp/sub installed and the guys who did it couldn't figure out the following: when you turn the stereo up pretty loud, stereo stops playing. The head unit is still on but no sound coming from all speakers. They un-wired the whole amp/sub system and still got the same thing. Is there a cut off circuit in the headunit if it is turned up loud? It really isn't that loud though cause the distortion is quite minimal. Anyone else experience this problem? Thanks for the help in advance.
