This is such a newbie question but ....

I noticed today that my auto was shifting at 6000rpm and i was going 70mph ... wtf???? I hadn't even noticed what gear i was in but that would be a WAY LOW shift for 3rd gear and a WAY HIGH shift for 2nd right? wtf gives?

you were in 2nd gear... its normal..
