Set feet on the ground first, then touch some metal part while getting up. Then you should be grounded.

I say...

run a thin elastic metallic wire to tether you to the car at all time...

actually, I've heard you can spray some anti-static stuff for clothes on your cloth seats.

1) Close the door by touching only the window.

or

2) Use the key and touch a metal part once you're outside the car.

or

3) By a anti-static antenna

I use my knuckles, so no nasty hand print.

You're not touching the outside door... just any metal part (b-pillar)

When you get out of the car let the calf of your leg touch the door sill while your heel rest's on the ground. You should feel it flow to the ground.

It could be the cloth on your seats. If the car is new, all you need to do is give it some time. It'll go away. I had the same problem. after a good month or so, Never More. I like the comment about touching your wife, maybe she'll like it.

Get a ground strap for the car. You've probly seen them on huge trucks. Its a nylon strap that attaches, usually to the rear axle and the other end drags on the ground.

Don't know about the rubber ones but it may work (its an insulator). They are usually nylon (same kinda stuff used on gym bag handles)

that would probably be your best choice...especially if it DOESNT EVEN WORK

this happened to me when i had my explorer (maybe its a ford thing?) it was a 95 so it didnt go away after a few months. also, if i remember correctly it happened more in the winter than in the warmer months. i dont think i ever solved it i just closed the door with my forearm as i was usually wearing long sleeves so it didnt shock as much. try the idea of spraying your seats with static guard or something that Timmeh mentioned.

Oops.. misspelling. I meant "buy"

Yeah, anti-static antenna will not work (at least mine doesn't work).

I used to work for a company that dealt with static elimination in industrial enviroments. What's happening is when you are getting out of the car the friction between the car's seat and your clothing generates a static charge. Since your body is insulated from ground you absorb the charge. Then you touch the metal door, ground yourself, and get a nasty shock. The suggestion of using a fabric softener is a good one. Spray down the cars seat with it and see if it helps. Just be aware that surface coatings will wear off.

Static discharges occur more frequently in fall and winter because humidity levels go down. When you see that blue spark that's atleast a 50,000 volt discharge. The reason we only get shocked and not fried is that there is minimal amperage.

What I do to limit the shock is to open the door latch, touch some metal then proceed to get out of the car. Since I am in constant contact with ground I don't build up a large charge and get the nasty shock.

When I forget to ground myself getting out of my max and have to bite the bullet I make a fist and close the door with my fist so the discharge is spread out over a larger surface area. When you use your fingers to close the car's door you are focusing a large charge to a single point and you get a concentrated discharge.
