Looking at a 2000 SE auto that needs an engine

Hey all,
I have been lurking on this forum for quite some time. Here is my question...a local Maxima SE auto with 138k miles on it is for sale locally (southern Oregon) but probably needs an engine. It is currently running, but makes a pretty bad knocking/banging sound when running. The guy had somewhat of a bandaid fix done on the valvetrain a year or so ago, but I am not sure this is related to the current problem. The car is pretty much loaded with sunroof, leather, bose, etc, and in decent (not primo) shape. The car is grey with black leather, and all stock. The guy is asking $2250 for the car, as is. I am thinking I can either have it fixed (probably by a personal mechanic friend, with me helping him) and either keep it to drive or sell. My questions are:

1. Is the car priced right?
2. Where can I get a good used engine?
3. What is this car worth in good running condition?
4. What other things should I be looking for?

thanks,
jeff

My 2000 se auto pings if I don't put premium gas in it. Try and put premium in it, if it doesn't make the pinging then its ok. Apparently as the engines get older they get really sensitive...

And also I've got 135,000 miles on mine, put it on a dyno and it still pulls 219/222 hp.

but before you go through all that, why dont you put in some premium gas, and throw some NGK platiunim spark plugs in there too, and see if that takes care of the noise

bring it to a shop and ask them whats wrong with it...or to the shop that did his work for him. then you can find out if it might be worth saving or if you definitely have to replace it. engines are cheap enough.

This is on your 4AT DEK, correct? What kind of dyno was it? Do you have the runfiles? Was it NA?

Its more than a ping, I am afraid....pretty noticeable knock/clanging goin on, from the start, at idle and everywhere up from there.

Assuming it needs a new engine...is this a fair price, and what is a fair price on a used engine (say less than 100k miles)?
