Since most of the links are broken in the OSCAI thread, I thought I'd post up the pictures I took of my install. Cost me a total of $11 for 4" dryer duct and a 4" work clamp at Lowe's. No huge gains or anything but it does feel a bit stronger according to the butt dyno from 3500 rpm and up, most noticable from 5000 rpm to redline.

Yeah, the front lip is pretty scuffed up but I can't see it unless I get down there so no biggie.









Still debating whether or not to do the GAB too. I've seen the ones with the drilled out tops in the filter holder but can't find any pics of the ones with the hanger to hold the filter in place-rather do that than drill because it would be easier to switch back. Anyone have pics? Can't find any in the threads I did a search on.

Nice work Scott! I think you should do the GAB, it's a fun experiment and you can just use a coat hanger instead of hacking up your filter holder. Are you getting an intake in the future?

I can't seem to find any pics where someone used a hanger so I can see how to do it. I posted a detailing EDU in our detailing forum that has a lot of products listed.

I'll probably stick with the one I made. I did a similar mod with the Accord I used to have and the AEM CAI I got to replace it didn't make much improvement except for the odd 4000 rpm bump that is typical of that style intake. The noise definitely increased though, louder than the exhaust. I'd rather keep my car quiet than pick another couple of horsepower and a lot more noise.

Which setup is that NMexMax? Stock air box with 3" midpipe (LRMAF) How is the sound compared to GAB or Berk?

I'll try to link you to the coat hanger, but it's pretty simple. The metal coat hanger is molded/bending around the air filter and sticks our at the top to hold it in place (wow, bad description).

I tried when I took them, can't see enough to make the pics worth posting.

Once you cut off the end of the 3.5" tip on the underside of the intake tract and attach the dryer hose, it is pretty obvious where to route it.

 

That's it.

Sounds really good. Smooth/quiet. Like I've always said, if done correctly, throttle response is dramatically improved.

Looks good. IIRC irish44j might have some pictures. He drilled holes and used plugs from Home Depot (of course), to plug up some of them.

PM him for pictures, or go to his cardomain. He may have some there.

 

I did this as well I will try to take pictures tomorrow. I really felt a good gain all across the board with this. What I did is only drill 4 because irish drilled 8 and ended up plugging up 4 of them when I followed the thread. Also, engine note was improved as well. Also, if you use a boring bit (not sure if this is the right name) it looks like it is meant to be on the airbox.

 

Hanger Gab mod is better than cutting up your intake IMO, plus it makes it sound sooooooooooooooooooo sexy between 2500 and 5000 rpm, no lie my friend who has a 5.7L Z28 asked me if i swapped a v8 in for the VQ30DE-K

 

however, i'd like to forewarn you that your gas mileage will take a rather large hit with the gab....

No it won't.

 

GAB did nothing to my mpg.

 

The only reason it may hurt instead of help is because you will find yourself hitting it a little harder a little more often to hear it. It's your foot... not the GAB

 

I got the GAB mod, and i have yet to see my gas mileage change. I'm going to have to agree with WEEBLE its your foot, not the mod

 

would putting like a piece of screen or something at the bottom of the vent be a wise move??

 

It might prevent large debris (like paper) from being sucked up, but the air filter will still block it from getting into the engine. I do find I have to pull out my filter about once a month and tap out the dirt that gets sucked up.

You just have to avoid puddles and standing water so you don't get hydrolock...it isn't an issue during a normal rain though...and it's not any more dangerous than if you had a true CAI installed

 

Not if you leave the upper part of the intake intact (the part that goes to the radiator support), plus I also have since done the GAB. Basicallly, the intake tract and GAB act like a hole in the side of a straw. You can't suck up anything once the hole in the side of the straw is no longer in the liquid. I'm safe as long as I stay out of water that goes up as high as my radiator. Besides, if I get into water that deep, I have a lot more than hydrolock to worry about.
