I'm gonna need new tires, i was thinking of getting a wider tire, maybe 235/45/17 to make it bulge out more. I was wondering if it's safe, and possible, and if anyone done it?
I had bad experience with Nitto's so i'm thinking of getting Dunlops.

yes it will work i had 245/45/17 toyo proxes on my stock 17's and it looks a lot better and handles better too!

 

Look in the FAQ's and try the search. This has been asked mayn times. I think the only manufacturer that says 235/45 or 245/45 will fit on the stock 17"x7" is Nitto, but I am not positive. Some people have done it, and had no porblems...yet (not saying that they are though).

 

Man I dont care what anyone says, DOT says that a 7" wide rim should not take anything larger than a 225.

If you want to gamble your safety on that, go right ahead.

By the way, you remember all them Explorer's getting flipped over? You wanna be part of that? Risking some 10mm larger tire width over safety?

man, nothing personal but i can't stand it when people talk about $hit they don't know...one of my friends was killed in an explorer incident so i do take this kind of personally...it had NOTHING to do with the size of the tire on the car...firestone had been having problems like these for years but because of so many recent incidents, they finally came out in the media

i have had 235/45's on my stock 7" wide rims for quite awhile and i have not had a single problem...same with everyone else that has them on these boards...i know plenty of people w/ other 7" rims that put anywhere between 185 and 245 on the 7" rim...235 is perfectly safe and if you do the math, it is safe...i have never heard of a car company putting the widest tire they could fit on a rim on it for stock because they know people are going to change it and they know that most non-car oriented people will say "well this size is close so it should be fine"...they are never going to go to the maximum from the factory...and 235 isn't even the maximum...people have safely put 245's on and i'm sure you could squeeze a 255 but that would probably be the MAX limit

Well I aint mean to use the Ford Explorer as a argument, but I dont feel safe doing that with tires since they can cause major harm since they are the only things keeping you on the ground and keeping you from getting into accidents.

Read alot of reports of how the DOT does major testing and they showed that 235 is not safe with a 7" rim. Not to a point where you can have "flippage" but I aint taking that risk

I swapped out the crappy stock rubber for a set of Michelin Pilot XGT-Z4's - 235/45ZR17's when I had just a thousand miles on my car. I have had these tires on previous Max's and totally LOVED them. The size looks great, it feels good and stable. I would highly recommend it. I would also highly recommend those tires. They are great in the rain, awesome on dry pavement and wear really well. I have 32K miles on my car now and have over 40% of the tread left with mostly local and semi- aggressive driving. They happen to also do pretty well in snow, much better than the stock tread.

Sorry but there is no PROOF that it is not safe. It is the manufacture safety recommendation and they have a good balance of safety margin. You can go over there recommendations and be safe. Lots of people put bigger tires for racing on there wheels all the time, road racing, autox, and drag, no problems and those are where the hardest conditions apply.

 

So if i decide to get 235/45/17, what prices should i expect?
How much are those Pilots?
