Regular 87 or Premium??

My 2001SE is giving 17mpg( 50/50 highway/city) which I think is very less even accounting for cold weather and short commutes. Is it typical for people driving in cold(read below freezing) weather?? I use 87 Regular gas. Does using premium gas help much with mpg?? Also what kind of maintenance would help improve mpg on maximas?? Don't know if its a repeat thread... don't care really... Please respond if you'd like to.... Thanks in advance..

On a side note.. I see lot of people saying the engine makes a pinging noise or knocks if lower grade fuel is used.... How does it feel exactly...?? How and where do u feel it??

87 is not even an option in the owners manual. I beleive it says 91 or higher 89 is exceptable but 87 no way. I beleive higher octane gas gets better milage by my experience but with the cost of gas I understand. You should always use no less then what the book recomends.

regular oil changes with synthetic oil, changing air filter regularly, correct air pressure in tires, not over reving, gentle acceleration, clean out your trunk.

basic stuff

I had a 2001 Maxima GLE and I always used 93 Octane. I could usually get about 400 miles out of a tank of gas in a mix of city and highway driving. One day I pushed the 87 button at the gas station and walked into the store to get some lottery tickets. When I came out I realized what I had done and figured that I would just drive it out. The car was empty (when the guage flashes twice) at 250 miles!!!!!

So hell yes, the octane rating makes a difference. Stick with the 93 octane in all Nissan/Infiniti Cars with a VQV6 engine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've been using 91 since it was the highest I was aware of. Just recently I found a pump in town that has 94 octane, but since the Maxima is parked until spring, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet... I ran the Max on 87 one time by accident, and got terrible mileage, no pinging that I noticed. Premium FTW!

Why people always think normal cars like maxima and accord should use regular gas? because they are not as good as BMWs and BENZs?
Which gas should be using is really depends on what kind of engine and compress ratio.

Well, my guess is that most people don't know the compression ratio of their engine, and unless it's supercharged or turbo charged, they assume premium isn't neccessary... I didn't really know premium should be used for the 3.5L, but before I bought the car, I did enough reading on here to figure that out.

For a while I was a cheap azz and went with mid grade. I noticed a weird rattling/pinging noise and thought my engine was on the way out. Switched to premium and engine sounded like butter again. Take it for what it is worth. You are really only saving a few bucks not using premium.

the "enough reading" part was what he failed to do before starting thread number 239034 on "which gas do i use..i'm cheap"

87-91

The Owner's manual says that 91 is recommended, but 87 is acceptable when 91 is not available. It also says that for best performance, use 91. I'm assuming that the timing is slightly adjusted by the ECU to accomodate the properly of cheap gas. With regard to MPG, I haven't noticed much between 87 and 91. With 87 in winter, mostly short trips and city driving, worst I've got is 15MPG, and it is not that uncommon. Average winter is about 20. In summer, even with full capcity (5 people + luggages) with A/C, the best I've got is 28MPG with full highway driving.

Very nice attitude. It's because of people like you that this forum is so cluttered with useless, repeat threads.

You now have access to the search function.

http://forums.maxima.org/search.php

Please use it.

In case you don't care to, these are all related to MPG and Octane questions. There are another 15 pages of such.

Fail.

'vq30 compression ratio' in the org search, 3rd link - http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....mpression+vq30

'vq30 compression ratio' in google, 1st link - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nissan_VQ_engine

Double fail.

They don't 'output what you input'. Tape recorders do that. Computers process information and (in the case of search engines) return results based on a query.

I don't believe you searched at all, but that's just my opinion...

Advanced timing when at cruising speed will give better mileage and premium fuel allows the timing to run more advanced than regular. We have 93 octane premium here and that is what I've been running since I bought the car.

My worst tank this winter (pretty much all city driving and sitting at stoplights because traffic engineers are retards) was 18.4 mpg.
