Clutch Fluid Question
Clutch Fluid Question
Ok, so my clutch fluid is really dirty. From what I understand you're supposed to use DOT 3 brake fluid in there right? I was gonna suck the old stuff out with a turkey baster and pour the new stuff in as a method of replacement like with power steering fluid.. people do that with clutch fluid right? Also, What's the clutch fluid system capacity? Like how long should I drive around before I have to suck it out and pour more new stuff in to get a good amount of clean fluid in there? The car is a 2003 6 speed.
Disclaimer: I did do a search and didn't find what I was looking for, so please spare the flames.

i was just expecting clean fluid.. the clutch performs fine now, so i wasn't expecting any performance difference.. what would happen if i did the turkey baster method?

Agreed on the bleeding point.
But, the fluid gets dirty as well from absorbing the water. WHich is why I change it out every two years like the brake fluid. He mentions his clutch performs fine so a fluid bleed would be fine and good preventative maint.
What I do on my 2K1 (3.0, which is why I didnt offer exact advice because they are two different engines/tranny's):
1) Remove as much old fluid using my mity vac on the MC resevoir. I dont suck it dry, as to leave like a MM at the top of the entrance to eliminate a source of bubbles.
2) Fill up with new fluid. I try to have two different colors to switch between to make sure I am getting a good bleed. I usually get the Gold and BLue ATE.
3) Attach the mity vac to the bleed point (slave) and then proceed to bleed and fill the MC resevoir until I get no bubbles and good clean fluid.
I believe it took about 4 fills of the MC res to make me happy with my fuild exchange.
The turkey baster method just puts good fluid "on top" versus cycling it through the system. Its like topping off the brake MC. The fluid does not get all the way to the wheels.
