Extended Warranty

Is it worth spending money on extended warranty for an old car like a 2001 Max with 80k on it??

If u have or had extended warranties, what was ur experience.

I have a 2003 Maxima SE.
I got the Nissan Extended Gold package when the car had 35k miles. I was covered bumper-to-bumper until 100k miles. I paid $1100.

I used the warranty only once....for a $200 repair. I am at 107k miles now and i am no longer covered. If you do the math - i lost money.

Recently....i was thinking about getting another warranty package (powertrain coverage only) but i am having hard time justifying spending another $1,000 for warranty, especially if i am not sure how long i'll keep the car for.

I just extended my warranty. I'm hoping I dont have huge issues with the oil burn or anything else that people describe on here. Otherwise I going into Nissan=) I also paid about 1060 for my warranty and its good 30k more miles. I'm at 58000 now. It really is your call...if you plan to keep it another 3 or 4 years it could be worth it. Is it paid off?

Not all extended warranties are equal. Be sure you check out what is covered, is the deductable per visit or per item, etc. I purchased a 5yr/100000km warrenty with my 01 @ 97000km. So far only used it for the seat heater, may have to have the tranny done. That in itself will cover the warranty. Got lucky and the business manager charged me for the 3yr warranty but had the 5 yr on the sales slip, the dealership had to pick up the tap for the extra $2000.

Well from what I hear the 3.0 is supposed to be more reliable then the 3.5..

Also it depends on how good the owner before you took care of the car..

Then you have to figure out if you have an extra 2k laying around that you don't know what to do with..

I purchased my warranty a year ago and it has already paid for itself and then some.

I have a 2K1 non-oil burning 3.0.

The only non-maint item I have had to replace in seven years are the O2's. And that was even questionable.

So an extended warranty would have been a waste of my time. But I also take great care of my car.

DO IT!! I have a 2001 with 90,000.. I have replaced the cat, o2 sensor, transmission, engine.. and recently the entire stereo stopped working. I am sure there is much more, I just can't think of it. The extended warranty was still valid for the Cat, and o2 sensor though.

If the warranty is from a reputable company, I'd do it. Consider what all could go wrong: alternator, belts, MAF, coils, transmission (particularly the valve body). I've replaced all of these, and both CV axles. Bought my Max with 85k and immediately the MAF, coils, and VB had to be replaced. Alternator summer before last, axles last summer...

I had the Nissan uber-platinum-super-extra-hard-diamond warrany (160 KKM, bumper to bumper) and it more than paid for itself. It's paid enough that on my next car, if (when) I get the extended warranty it will already be paid for!

However, an extended warranty is only as good as a dealer that will respect it. My original dealer was a **** so I had to hunt around and found 2 dealers in the area. I travel a lot and often consulted my fellow Canadian Org members to point me in the right direction, they never let me down.

I don't think I would go for a 3rd party warranty, especially with a new car. I have just heard too many bad stories.

My main reasons for the warranty were: 1) I wanted a warranty to cover me for the finance period (60 months) 2) I do a lot of mileage 3) I am not easy on my cars.

Some things that were done:
- Radio + sunroof motor (65Kkm)
- front wheel bearings (107Kkm)
- Alternator (102Kkm)
- Crank pulley (152Kkm)
- Rear 02 (twice) (80-110Kkm)
- Driver door lock / latch (157Kkm)
- Rear calipers (150Kkm)
