Could you ask the muffler shop if having the y-pipe is legal? I'm still wondering about this before I get one for my Maxima.

I dont see what the big issue here is, I mean Nissan Dealer would mind, but a muffler shop wont say nothing, they wont say much even if you ask them to remove your cat and install straight pipe.

The Y-pipes are NOT legal in CA. It removes a cat which is a big no no. The car will still pass smog after it's warmed up but it's still technically illegal because the emmisions equipment has been altered or removed. But don't sweat it, you'll be fine. Y-pipe was the best mod I have done so far.
Be sure that they replace the gaskets with the new gaskets you got. Also, ask them to use anti-sieze on the bolts and O2 sensors... They may need to unbolt the cross-member underneath behind the main cat to fit the y-pipe in. The Cattman pipe is a tight fit, but everything should line up fine.

i was thinking about that. i know the effects it has on the auto, but is it good for the manual as well? there are mixed feelings about the udp so im really not sure if i should get it.

on the y-pipe subject
I just got mine today and was wondering if anyone knows of a good site that has detailed instructions on the installation. If so, it would be greatly appreciated. And yes, I did a search, got nothing helpful.
