Random O2 Codes after service
Random O2 Codes after service
I have had some recent services done to my 2001 AE and I have been getting sporadic O2 SESs since. Below is my service history, can you see a pattern? I have been doing some search and read something from '04 about loose ECU and wiring harness connections... could that be a culprit?
Received car 1 month ago:
P0420 for O2 sensor and P0505 for IACV were displayed.
Had IACV replaced and we got back from the dealer, as expected,**no SES lights**. I can understand that the car is now in "learning mode".
2 weeks ago:
P0160 code was thrown for O2 sensor. I filled up on gas and when I started the car the code when away.
1 week ago:
MAF replaced. 1 day later SES light came on, I went to Autzone today and got the following codes: P0158, P0159, and P0420. **I did not have the ECU 'reprogrammed' after the MAF replacement**. I read on here it wasn't necessary.
Could not reprogramming the ECU after the MAF was replaced be causing these problems? The MAF solved the wierd surging problems I was having. I think it's weird that P0160 was reporting an O2 sensor as bad, and then a week later it isn't bad. Thanks in advance!

The fact that it is coming and going may indicate that the sensor is beginning to fail, you may want to consider replacing it soon.
Also it could be a loose connection to the harness. Check to make sure that all of your wires are properly connected before paying for any further repairs.
Did you do this work yourself or did you have this work done at the dealership, if it was done at the dealership did you talk to any of the techs about the problems that you were having?

Dealership for the IACV and I replaced the MAF myself. I didn't ask them about this problem because at the time it was only a P0420 and I didn't want to get robbed to replace it. Since then and since these other repairs the other oxygen sensor codes have come up. I can see that P0158 and P0159 are related to the same sensor -- could P0420 come from the same sensor, too?
Try resetting the codes again. I replaced the O2 for a P0139/1147 SES codes, about 160 miles later I got the same codes again. Reset it again and they haven't come back on in the last 1200 miles. Go figure.
Scott -- thanks, will do. AutoZone was giving me flak last time about resetting the codes. Next time I will ask them if I can push the button.
NmexMAX -- thanks for the heads up. If I am still having problems I might go get the flash.
Everyone, thanks for the help. It is much appreciated.

So I went to AutoZone the other day and I have another new code, a P0160. Bank 2 Sensor 2. I ask the AutoZone guy to reset the SES lights and he claims he can't do it because it will be illegal!? He said people have been doing that to skirt failing emissions tests. I didn't care to argue with him (that the Max will fail if it has just been reset) so I am wondering -- can I reset the codes just as easily by pulling off a battery cable from the terminal? I searched and found some posts say the codes are stored -- is that true?
battery would need to be disconnected for at least over night to clear memory in ecu. there is a procedure you can do using the E-gas pedal to clear codes if you have the 5.5 gen.
I have a 5.5 failed emmisssions due to the fact i need I to change my 02 sensor for bank 2 sensor 2. Im having a friend change it out for me. Can you tell me how to clear the codes so I can do a retest or will the codes go away after the swap for the new O2 sensor?
does it matter what brand of senor I use? any rec?

I searched this and still have questions. My non dealer repair shop replaced 2 O2 sensors for $600 in December 2007 because the SES light came on and warned that the catalytic converters could be next. In February 2008 the SES light came back on and I had 2 catalytic converters replaced for $1700. The SES light is back now again with code P0158. Doing some browsing I found that there is a TSB for this that requires reflashing the ECU which was not done on the previous repairs.
Questions-
Was there anything wrong with the o2 sensors or catalytic convertors or was it electronic gremlins?
Could I have avoided the cat replacement if the ECU was reflashed when the o2 sensors were replaced?
Now that the SES is back, what is the downside to ignoring it or erasing it with a code reader/eraser?
Thanks for any and all replies.

so bosch and NGK o2 sensors aren't good to deal with?
your saying go with OEM/Nissan sensors...... as the preferred suggestion?, share a bit of info on this sooner
i ask because i purcahsed NGK o2 sensors bank two and replaced em
Nissan doesn't manufacture O2 sensors, Bosch & NGK do, our sensors are Bosch. Also, his reply was back in May too.

But Sooner wasn't typing put of anyone's tailpipe when he created this thread:

No one could tell now. But you got horrifically hosed into the next millennium.
Go to the dealer and have them perform the TSB and see what happens.
He's talking out of his tailpipe
