Is 100K the killer mark?

Holy cow, my 2000 GLE just hit 100K and all the damn lights just lite up! Check engine, TCS & SLIP... So I pull the plugs out... they needed to be change... did that and it was fine for about 20 miles... when they all came back again... so I did a search... everything pointed to the coils as the car was misfiring even with the new plugs... (NGK-Rs)

So when out got all new coils, replaced them and the car has been running like a champ for another 20 miles but i was just parked... car was running and it just died! The car is an AUTO it was on parked running and it die... What now? Alternator?

Anyway, my exhaust is shot too... just looked under the car the downpipe is rust-da-f*ck out. So looks like I'm going to need a new exhaust system... anyone has any suggestions? Oh by the way the car was throwing a cat code... im hoping is just because of the bad exhaust... and not the O2s...

Well that's it... anyone else has been here before? not even my piece of s#it mitsubishi did this to me at 100K. Hell not even my FORD! hahaha

damn... looks like you just got hit with some bad luck man.. 100k for most people is just the beginning if the car is maintained right.. as far as why the car won't start, we're gonna need some more info... like what do you hear when you try to start it? and did those lights go away after you changed the plugs and coils (which was a good move, and it will go a long way in making your engine run right for a while)?

maybe i wasnt too clear...

right now there car has no check engine lights... everything is fine with it... the exhaust is leaking (rusted like I said) I reseted the computer and it hasnt come back yet...

but a few weeks ago... while i was in park the car just died... RPMs dropped and dead... when I cranked the car back up it fired without a problem... so i didnt pay too much attention to it...

Today... after i replaced all the coils... i drove the car on and off for 20 miles... i was dropping off some people and while parked (running) it die again... turned the car back on... fired right up... notice the rpms where a little bouncy at first but level up... (but when i say bouncy... it wasnt crazy... i notice they moved from 500 to 700 rmps down to 500 and then idle fine again...)

Sounds like a idle control valve problem to me. Definitely something is off in the throttle body given the info you provided. The IACV is generally usually the first part to go on the TB.

the IACV is a very common problem on these cars once it gets close to or over 100k miles. its about $230 new from the dealership, not that much to replace either.

MY car just hit 100,000 miles last week, so far no problems, i do have some hesitation and jerkiness from 1600rpm to 2000rpm and i have no idea why?
I did a FULL tune up at 95,000 new plugs and all new fluids, pcv....

but as far as 100k its nothing for these cars, i traded in my 96 with 229K miles and its was running great!

It's the automotive Pearl Harbor!
My '02 auto has 161,500 on it and is running fine, although I had a worrying idle RPM variation for a few minutes a week ago... don't know what that's aboot. Also, there is a belt making a squeaking noise that is really annoying. Alternator maybe?

126,350 or so on mine. Seems to be running pretty good. Changed an O2 sensor and thermostat in the last 6 months. Wheel bearing too, but that appeared to be an issue with who ever worked on the car last (not properly torqueing the 22 mm nut and it backed off and wasted the bearing). Lot less problems than I was having with my V6 626.

A rusted exhaust system probably has more to do with where you live than Nissan engineering.

For the most part my car runs likea champ... its just that lately little things started to happen to it... i dont mind 1 thing here and there, i know the car is older now... but when all at once... dont like that, specially cuz its harder to find the problem.

as for 100k being the killer mark... hahaha it was joke to get people to look at the thread a bit faster... my mom also has a maxima... and trust me she doesnt take care of it like i do... but her 96 just hit over 250K and that thing has zero problems... we had to replace little stuff but once in a while... guess I better start beating on my max so it learns to like it rough! hahaha

the rusted exhaust is my fault... to be honest, i never looked under the car when I got it... i felt in love with the interior and the exterior of the car when i first go it... for that im a dump ***... any idea how much is a new exhaust system? I figure i better change the whole damn thing so i can avoid more problems down the road... or at least not right away...

I have a 01 and:
at 75k had misfire = changed all coilpacks and plugs
at 90k alternator went out = put in oem used as rebuilds are crap
now im at 131k and replacing suspension; shocks, upper strut mounts, bearings, dust boots or bellows, i also need to change my belts
no exhaust problems as i have hotshot headers and frankencar catback woohoo

the $500 bucks for the coils is what really pissed me off... not because of the car... hell if they go they go... but went i got the car... it was misfiring and the dealer told me they were going to change them all... well i knew i should of check... but no, me being me and trusting everyone... 6 months later it was misfiring again...

When I took out the front 3 plugs and coils... they looked old... and 2 out of the 3 in the rear too looked old . So the ****ers only changed 1 plug and 1 coil... now i moved from nj to nc so i cant pay them a visit and throw the coils and plugs at their feet! f*cking a$$holes! Specially cuz they flash a receipt of the job being done... maybe they got ripped off by the shop who knows a this point...

Now I really got to get this damn exhaust fix... specially cuz im getting a buzzing noise as the rusted heat shields vibrate. (I took some of them out last night, but i think the downpipe my biggest problem... as the flex pipe is all rusted around the connecting pipe to the main cat).

Look in the 5th gen classifieds. Someone is always selling a stock exhaust after they get an aftermarket one.

I did a search and found a few threads... but non like you described... funny thing is most people want to trade their after market exhaust back for stock ones... lol guess we are getting too old for loud cars LOL

D.

PS: question, is the 5 and the 5.5 gen exhaust different? if so in what ways?

Custom mandrel bent exhaust with a turbo style muffler (like a Walker Quiet Flow) or a new stock muffler (but I bet it isn't cheap!) would be your best bet for a quiet exhaust system.

lucky you... guess i wasnt as lucky... the dealer only replace coil #5 too and only 1 damn spark plug! f*cking bastards! I'm slowly bringing it back to good shape... so far...

new tires
new brakes pads
new taillight bulbs
2 new rotors
6 new coils
6 new spark plugs
new air filter
new tranny oil
oil changed every 3k

just order a set of oem 03 taillights but I guess I should of saved that for the exhaust... hahaha I still want to tints the windows, changer the 16"s for 17"s maybe 18"s SE style wheels. Change the headlights with 02-03 HIDs. I need to replace my steering wheel as its a bit worn out on the left side... and I also need to find a driverside seat or a place to do a good patch job. (the flare on the left side is also a bit worn out) I hate it when people dont take care of their cars.

Goodluck on that. However I dont think you should worry about finiky things such as: Seats and steering wheels. Just take to a reliable mechanic you trust and let him inspect the whole car and see what you need now and what can wait a bit and go from there.

In fact the first thing i did when i got the car was call the dealer to see the price of a new steering wheel... and well... it wasnt good... hahahaha they want my first and second born for it...

220,000 on my '01. Other than brakes, one set of plugs, a complete suspension overhall at 200k, tires and fluid changes; I fixed the VIAS at 70k, rear wheel bearing at 150k and recharged the A/C at 210k. Thats it. Even the clutch is original and holding strong, and the engine burns no more oil than it did new (1/2 quart in 5000 miles).
