Trans servicing questions.

Have a 2001 Max GLE. Looking to service the transmission. I am very mechanically inclined and have access to "the tools" as I am sponsored by Snap-On. Anyway....... Is this a job I can perform with out a major head ache?
This would include replacing the trans filter and oil. Reason for thinking it needs a servicing is that Ive put 30K on it since purchase (147Kmiles on it)...And it slips a bit when I first throw it in reverse. Oil has a good smell but is not Bright red. Looks "used" . Also, what oil is recommended? Should I keep with OEM oil or switch to AMS oil?
AMS 25K mile engine oil FOR THE WIN!!

Thanks

Is there a reason I should not use AMS (7.50 a quart at my cost) Vs. cheaper OEM from the dealer???
