After market front pre-cat

2K w/131,000. Throwing 0430 after running on a bad MAF for too long. Front pre-cat is clogged. Need to get rid of the codes for inspection and almost ordered the O2 sim. Then I found this item: http://www.discountconverter.com/dir...?productID=208

Anyone deal with these folks before?

I figure its a better idea to replace the CAT than to risk sucking parts of it back into my engine.

Another option to consider would be to just gut your current precat and get an o2 sim. Or get a fed spec manifold.

Here is another one I found from Easter Catalytic. The production looks better on this model: http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/de...l?reviews=true

Thanks for the reply. I'd really like to keep the exhaust system legit if I can. Not at a cost of $709 from the dealer though ~$200 seems more reasonable.

I went ahead and bought the Eastern Catalytic converter from www.autopartswarehouse.com. $219 delivered w/free shipping. Placed the order on the 11th. It was delivered on the 14th.

I expect to get it installed by my mechanic sometime this week. I'll report back on how this works out.

eliminating the precats is not illegal, as many members on here run headers and have eliminated them

I don't have any precats because of my headers, the only reason we have them is because they are there for when the car first starts and once the car warms to idle temperature they are useless.

an o2 sim would've been cheaper and it would've worked just fine

Removing any emissions equipment piece is absolutely Illegal, the reason people with headers have passed inspection is due to o2 sims/tuning coupled with the fact that most inspection stations do not have any clue that a car is supposed to have precats. Most will not even look for the main cat converter if it passes the OBDII test.

The precats are only used for when the car is warming up....after that the emissions depend on the main cat.

I have had several cars where there has only just the main cat and I have passed inspection just fine.

And yes some inspectors will probably not notice if the cat is gutted or removed, mainly because all o2 sensors are before the main cat on our cars IIRC. The only way they can tell is the smog test.

If the precat is clogged, cheap and easy solution would be to get a Fed spec front manifold off a 4th Gen or Fed spec 2000, as already posted.

http://desertpearlmax2.homestead.com/fed_ypipe.html

If not, get an O2 sim.

And yes, tampering with any emissions equipment is illegal. Passing inspections, obviously, is another issue altogether.

Right I know all about the function of the precats, I never doubted you couldn't pass inspection without them...I have done it on a few vehicles also, but removing them is infact illegal.

Thanks for posting that link. It didn't turn up in my searches. At any rate this mod is beyond my meger capabilities.

I knew that the pre-cats only function is to improve emissions during warm up. I'm not looking to get HP gains or install a y-pipe or make my exhaust any louder than the Magnaflow cat-back I already have.

I was looking for a letter of the law legal solution that is cheaper than the >$1000 dealer quote. The Eastern Catalytic part looks like that solution.

The install is scheduled for Friday.

Thanks for chiming in Dave and Puppet! You guys are great!

There were no fitment issues with the cat . It went right in. Took the mechanic a little over an hour.

He reset the SEL. I plan to get the car inspected on Monday. I'm hoping that damn light stays off till then.

I didn't think I'd feel the loss of HP with a functioning bank 2 cat but I do What are you gonna do.

One more year with my 2k. Then I'll be looking at an '08 or an '09.

hi KidH, how much did it cost for the cat install?
My max is making a rattling sound when i let go of the accelerator. The heat shield is tight so i know it is the front or back cat.

Labor was $112.50. That's $75/hr. 1.5 hours to do the job.

Hey Dennis,
I've been driving around with a P0430 Code for about 2 years. I do smell the rotten egg smell. Went to the dealership a while back (8 months ago) did a diagnostic, told me it was my pre-cat (catalytic convertor). Passed smog though after multiple times of driving around on the freeway. I was wondering, did you replace the O2 sensors also or you just replaced with the Eastern Catalytic Convertor? Also I would greatly appreciate it if you can tell me how things are going on with the new cat installed.

Thanks a million in advance
Will

precat

I replaced all the 02 sensors after a p0430. Code came back. Purchased and installed eastern precat for about $200. Installed myself. The code has not returned since. Its been about 3k miles.

Okay I purchased the Eastern Catalytic Convertor for $194.00. Got it installed today for $100 (Labor). The car drives a lot better. However....the car sounds a lot louder and it seems like I have a diesel or a 4 cylinder maxima at very very low speeds. I still have the SES code and I will clear it out tomorrow, see if it comes back, but other than that I will just have to either deal with it...or does anybody know how the noise can be replaced. And for anyone who has fixed the pre-cat with the Eastern, is there a low cheap growl at low speeds or is that just me and something is wrong?

Okay no SES light so far (24 miles) which is a good sign, runs great too, however no gasket came with the Eastern Cat when I purchased it so the shop I took it too just put a rubber seal over it = Cheap Sound.

Anyone know if I could get the gasket seal custom made to fit the Eastern Cat and re-install the CAT? The Cat Gasket for OE doesn't fit the one for Eastern....(Eastern is little bit bigger)

i ran a 430 this past summer. my light comes and goes when it wants. i took it to a friend and he mentioned my intake has a leak. he asked if at times my car gives off a slight shake when idle... yes it does. He mentioned replacing my intake my clear the problem due to the precat being connected to it (fix known problem first solution). any experience with this issue from any of you guys? My symptoms are slight tremble but no egg smell like everyone else states.

Is this 0430 code a situation where you get to replace a bunch of parts before finding the solution? Appears some of you have done the new 02 sensors & simulators and also the pre-cat thingy and find out it is the precat.

How can you determine the solution w/ out all these other parts replaced?
