Manual Transmission Fluid
Manual Transmission Fluid
So long story short.. my cv boot is ripped and I ordered a new one
I have a y 2000 maxima 5 speed MT
To replace said boot I need to drain gear oil (and thus put new oil once I install it)
I read that redline MT-90 is good... is it 75w90?
46 bucks for a gallon sound good? http://www.redlineoil.com/onlinecart...d=152&x=72&y=9
how much of it do I need?
thanks for your help guys

Is it the outer C/V boot that ripped? If so... I never remove the entire axle. I just pull take out the spindle to strut bolts, remove the c/v joint from the hub and use a big hammer and smack the joint off while i pull on the other side.
Or if you feel like you need to remove the axle then just lift the car up sideways and this usually keeps the fluid from leaking out.

Just curious but whats not to like about it? Can you really feel a difference between the redline and royal purple?
I know they want us to use strictly Nissan Manual Trans fluid on our services now due to aftermarket fluid causing hard shifting when cold.

I put in redline mt-90 and when i first start the car getting into first is a problem, I think it's too thin, once it warms up it's fine but i want something that can handle cold as well as warmed up...If i don't like the royal purple then i'm going back to stock but from what i've read on the web royal purple max gear is the way to go cause it's thick like stock but provides the same ease of shifting and yes you can feel a difference changing the fluid...
Ah gotcha. I drive a 4th gen but its an auto and my 85 SVO uses ATF as manual tranny fluid. Yeah I do know there is a TSB for difficulty shifting gears when cold on newer Nissans, they strongly recommend us to only use factory MT fluid. But if Royal Purple is good also then i'd give that a try, prob around the same amount of money retail.
For nissan gearboxes you must use GL4. Be careful in reading the label as most stores like autozone or pepboys dont carry a gl4 type gear oil. Redline is GL-4 and i believe is straight 90. It doesnt matter 75w/90 or 90 as when the oil is warm, it will be 90w. I get cases of redline as its GL4. GL5 will eat the syncros....
Also you will need 5-6 quarts. Fill until it starts dripping out the side fill hole.

I've used Redline and am now using Amsoil. Somehow, I think the Redline feels better in the cold and in general though, but that could just be me.
5-6 quarts? I don't think so. You will need to buy 3 quarts and you will not even be able to use all of the third quart.

hey guys ... i`m about to do a 5 speed swap in a month. I`m gathering all the stuff adn gear oil was one thing i forgot to get. My question is .. do u actually feel a difference w/ the oils ? ... I was suggested redline or Royal purple. I was thinking of just putting regular 75W90 in it just to get used to driving my car as a stick. Feedback please
I have the redline mt-90 and like it.
capacity is 4.4 quarts
I also believe the royal purple is gl5. I seem to remember someone on the org saying they talked to a representative of royal purple who said it was ok to use but who knows if he knew what he was talking about or not. personally i wouldnt risk it when there are other good options out there. (Redline and Amsoil)

The reason Gl5 is bad for our trannies is because our syncros are made of soft metal, brass. GL5 has additives like sulfur which will eat at the brass and GL5 is mainly made for hypoid gears. Definitely stick to GL4 to prevent this.
With the quarts amount, I simply put what was stated in the FSM. Give or take a few quarts as they most likely mean dry capacity.

I just filled my manual transmission with Mobil 1 Synthetic and it stated that it meets/exceeds GL5.
So you are telling me that my synchros will go south???
No. Read the data sheet.......part way down the page in "Applications". http://www.mobil.com/USA-English/Lub..._LS_75W-90.asp
Actually, I was contemplating Royal as someone mentioned earlier, that it doesnt contain sulphur. On the bottles it states that it's non corrosive that it can be used for both requirements 4 and 5
Would you guys use Royal purple? the only other choice left is redline

I use mobil one full synthetic 75w/90 and they say that it works for GL-5 And is completely safe for GL-4 applications as well.

Yeah thats exactly what I put in my trans. So I called up Mobil and I read the specs to them as per the owners manual; 75W 90 GL4 only. The mobil tech stated not to use this oil.

Any thoughts on what the tech said to me vs what its stated on the specifications on the bottle/web page.
Although the only thing i see that refers to GL-4 is this:
Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lubricant LS 75W-90 can also be used in rear axles where API Service GL-4 lubricant is recommended
However, this is for rear axles not transmissions.
My assumption for putting in Mobil 1 GL-5 is because normally GL-5 contains properties of past specifications so I figured its good to go.

I got the same response from mobil 1 a few years ago. They do not make a synthetic gl-4 fluid. And yet some nissan dealerships use this in our cars. My synchros fried this summer and i could probably try to make them pay for the new tranny I bought but can't prove what they put in the tranny. Bills don't say exactly what they put in there. I found out by accident. (long story)
The Mobil data sheet also stated this, which to me says that it can be used in the Maxi's manual trannies: "Not recommended for automatic, manual or semiautomatic transmissions for which engine oil or automatic transmission fluids are recommended." AND......don't forget that GL4 is a hypoid gear lubricant like GL5 and our trannies have differential gears that commonly requires a hypoid gear lubricant (Nissan is specifying a hypoid lubricant). If GL4 is being used by Nissan in our trannies, then I believe that GL5 is not going to hurt anything. Now, if the spec. called for was Mercon auto tranny fluid for example, then no, it would not be wise to use it.

Well, I guess the best thing to do is based on the uncertainty that's still in my head, to go spend another $50 plus
and just change it to be on the safe side.
The only thing that I see out there in GL4 that's readily available is Redline
Funny on a side note, Redline lists autozone and pepboys as sellers but none of the stores I called sell it.
So i'm getting it from a local speed shop (S+K Speed shop)

and just change it to be on the safe side.

I changed my fluid from mt90 to royal BAD MOVE!!!! Notchy shifts and issues going into gear when cold.
I now have amsoil and, at least in my case, I have found this to produce slightly smotther shifts than mt90.

Keep me updated on this if you would. I switched to Redline MT-90 a little more than a month ago and it was nice and smooth-shifting for a bit. Now the shifting is more notchy than previously with the fluid that was in the car when I bought it with 102,000 milies. I can't be sure now if it's simply the fluid or if it's just that the fluid can't handle the cold weather thats beginning. I'm in Pennsylvania...finally been getting into the 20's overnight.
NOOOOOOOOOO.............DO NOT USE THIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still sticking to MT-90, used in the past in other cars and the only thing as mentioned by many, is the cold temp shifting, not so good...
Your not supossed to use royal purple, I was saying to use royal purple Max gear, that's not regular royal purple and i don't like MT-90...
I'm switching to Royal Purple Max Gear, it's the best fluid on the market, I drove tree cars that had it and the difference is night and day...
http://www.royalpurple.com/gear-oil.html
That's the link to what i'm talking about not regular RP...

finally changed the oil to Redline mt 90
although a lot of people say it sucks in the morning, i feel that it shifts pretty smooth, or at least smoother than the GL5 mobil. In other cars that I have, the redline did shift a bit course when cold in the mornings.

Wait til you have it in there for a couple thousand miles then report back. And it should be better than GL5 considering our cars instruct you to you GL4 anway.
