Help ASAP: How to get new key made?

So in a stupid decision last night I decided to give my sister and fiance my keyring so they could go walk to the store and be able to get back into my apartment complex. They were drunk, and I was tired enough I fell asleep before they got back.

Well I woke up this morning to discover my apartment keys were on the keyring, but my car key and keyfob were missing. A three hour search for them ensued. Never found them.

So now I'm stuck needing a new key and of course the dealership and main offices of AAA are closed. What I'm wondering is if I have to get the car towed in to get the new key made, or if they can activate the chip by the VIN number or something. Any advice would help. Thank you.

A locksmith would be able to get you into your car, but as far as starting it, unless you had another fob, they won't be able to duplicate the code from the chip.

As long as you haven't had your lockset replaced, the dealer should be able to do it by VIN.

So, dealer might be your better approach. To avoid hassle, bring proof that you own the car.

Awesome that's what I needed to know. I was hoping I could just use the VIN instead of calling AAA to tow it there.

I would still call the dealer first thing when they open to confirm.

This way, if they for whatever reason need the car, you have the entire day to arrange to get your car there.

Producing a key with just a VIN is possible if there is a key code associated with that number in the Nissan database, which is alledgely entered into the system by the original new car dealer (this "logic" I still don't buy). But if that code was never entered you are SOL.

I had a key made from a local locksmith for 50 bucks. I only had one key and it took him less than 15 minutes to make it. According to him, the key I original got when I bought the car 4 months ago, was a clone. Although it has the nissan logo on it, it has a blue rectangular area showing on one edge of the rubber close to where the metal meets the rubber. He said original or master keys have the chips completely encased (please verify if someone knows otherwise). It is a peace of mind having an extra key for backup.

My keys are original and the blue is visible...

In fact I also have a copied key in which the chip is not visible at all.

I'm assuming you purchased your car brand new and that's how you know for sure that they are, in fact, original keys (?)

That's what I thought; I guess you've got a cloned key too. It doesn't make a difference to me anyway, as long as it gets my car running. Still a peace of mind having an extra one.

Having the dealership make a key by VIN without the car in possession, is like trying to get a locksmith to make a key to fit a lock you dont have in your possession. For obvious reasons. Depending on the dealership, they may want to see the car. Otherwise there may be some liability on their part. Hopefully they will let you bring in proof of ownership?
Hope it works out with too much trouble. Oh and I'm sure it gonna cost you a pretty penny.

Why do you not have 2 key fobs? I do.
