Flowmaster 40 Series Exhaust - Thoughts?

Thanks to the help of a fellow .org member, I was convinced to replace the muffler tomorrow in my 02 Max. I am going to go with the 40 Series Flowmaster and I was wondering what people thought about it? I didn't see many videos or reviews about it on the 5.5 gen, so I was just wondering how it sounds on a completely stock car with only the GAB mod? Will it drone or be really loud? I don't think it will have the bees-in-a-can sound, but i just wanna check before I go ahead with this tomorrow.

Good choice. Better then your "new exhaust mod". It should sound good.

To be honest with you it sounded like exactly what it was, an exhaust leak.

Maybe from the sh1tty camera quality, but in person, it didn't. Let's just let that go, and keep this thread on topic.

it will probably drone a little, flowmasters are known for it on v8's

You should try washers between your head and manifold. Should sound awsome.

How loud? And you're all stock except for a Flowmaster 40 series?? I heard one with headers and it didn't seem too loud. Did it drone at all? Any more information?

it sounds good and agressive. I have a 40 series with no resonator, GAB and OSCAI. It drones since its an auto but when I get on it on the highway the loud drone goes away and its a nice purr. Even at start up it sounds good. Ive had guys in my apt complex that drive cobras snap thier necks trying to see what was making that noise

Cool, man. Thanks for the info. But with no res, it's gotta be reallyy loud! Did you ever have it with the res on? Any thoughts on that if you did?

How does that compare to the 40 series? What are the main differences?

i think the only reason for a res is for "in-cabin" noise from what ive read on here. It'll just reduce the noise inside. Im no exhaust guru, im just going from personal experience. I did research the different sounds becasue I was worried it was gonna sound ugly b/c a friend of mine had a v6 camaro with duals on it and it was

It's not just for in-cabin noise. The reason removing a res is so loud inside is cause on the Maxima's, the one you remove is right under you, really. It does affect the outside sound as well, because there is less resistance for the air to get through and it will change the tone.

On my VR6 Jetta, I took out the resonator (called the suitcase cause it was huge and weighed a ton) and put in a straight pipe and it was the best sounding exhaust I've ever heard, to be honest. VR6s in general sound awesome, but that's got to do with how the engine is laid out.

Everyone's definition for loud varies. The flowmaster drones in the cabin, and can be heard down the block. With an auto trans you can't really control the noise..With The video, this was over summer so I believe the only thing I may have had was a cone filter, but i don't remember.

Got it. Nice vid, only thing is, it's hard to tell how it really sounds cause the engine isn't under load.

What RPMs does it drone at? And overall, under load, it sounds pretty good inside and outside?

Yea it sounds decent, if you don't mind always hearing the noise. Basically everyday driving in the city you'll hear the drone. But the quicker and harder you tap the gas, the quicker the drone goes away

The 60 series is more throaty, you mean? That's kinda what I'm looking for.

The 3rd link is actually a link to yourhotcar.com. I think you meant 2nd link. It would be awesome if you could count.

I looked up your video and that doesn't sound at all raspy to me or G35-like. Don't know if you meant on the 3.5s they do.

I think after some research, I would be happier with the 50 series, not sure about the 60. I hope the shop has that, I know they have the 40 series. I'll find out tomorrow. Any more input is appreciated.

viper this is maverick, hahah always wanted to say that..
i have a 50 series with test pipe and wai. i like the sound of mine. Take a listen and see what you think. the exh has a bit of rasp in it in the vid due to i just put it on 2 days before. ive had it on now for about 6 months and no rasp at all at anytime. maybe it broke in. When at a light or anything and takeoff you can def hear it. even with the windows closed but its not annoying. it doesnt drone on the hiway either. i like mine. i think a 40 would have to loud for me

Yea, it is a little raspy for me, but it's interesting to know that the sound changed after a few months.

I went ahead with the 40 series and I have to say, it's not loud at all inside the cabin. After about 3k @ normal acceleration, you don't hear it much anymore. At idle, you can barely hear it. I don't think it's loud at all, but it's raining today, so maybe that's hiding some of the noise. Inside the car, I actually wish it were a bit louder. I'll try to get vids up this weekend. I just wanna find my camera.

i hated the 40 series on my 4th gen so much i had the shop cut it off a week later and install a new muffler.

personally i'd just make an exhaust leak or drill holes in my muffler.

edit: you want it louder have them bend a 2.5'' pipe from your car to the muffler. should cost around $100-150 bucks. then you'll actually be able to hear it. a 40 series just slapped on it quiet. i'v heard it before...

What do you mean from my car to the muffler? Did you mean the cat? And straight pipe from the cat would probably be too loud.

i meant cat sorry. it's not too loud(i had this set up) if you don't have a Y pipe. then it gets 2x as loud. also you can always put in a resonator in if you put on a Y and it gets a bit to loud...

louder is better. got any pics up yet?

I'm sorry, could you make it a little clearer? If I'm completely stock except for the muffler, and I do a 2.5in from the cat back, it won't be too loud? But if I would do a y-pipe with the 2.5in and 40 series it would be too loud? Is that waht you're saying?

And no, unfortunately, the car was off the lift when I got back there and the weather is for **** today.

By the way, sorry about yesterday and criticizing your car in my thread.

Apology accepted. And any videos of your setup with the 2.5in to the 40?
