Wiring harness for trailer hitch

Has anyone wired their own universal taillight Converter for a trailer hitch?

I have a 2001 ae max. 5 sp.

Mine is a Curt hitch, and after rolling around in the snow last night for a few hours installing it, I'm confident it will pull my snowmobile trailer no problem. Its a powerful car, or else we wouldn't love them right?

Anyways, any wiring tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

well ive got the 01 ae AT and i bought a hitch and wire harness from autozone for about 175 bucks. the car pulls better than my old ranger did lol. i ran my wires up through the spare tire pan towards the back, and then up behind the tail lights in the trunk. the universal four prong kit i got came with a wire tester, which makes it pretty easy to find the right wire.
i pull a 5x8 utility trailer with some dirtbikes, and a jetski, the occaisional bike rack and the car does great even in the snow!

When you attached your universal 4 prong kit, where on the wiring harness did you "splice" into please... It sounds like you connected ahead of the spare tire pan, not close to the taillight as I would have tried? My converter is supposed to splice into the existing wiring harness... was it the same with yours?

If you get a chance, it would be awesome if you can give me any indication of what color coded Maxima wire went to what wire on the converter.

I used the Hopkins Towing Solutions "basic taillight converter" (Hopkins part number 48915). I'm sure I bought it at Wal Mart or Auto Zone. Just a simple 4 wire solution. It comes with the following:

Converter Wiring Identification
White.................................Ground
Red....................................Brake
Green.................................Right Turn
Yellow................................Left Turn
Brown.................................Park/Tail

My Haynes manual provides the following:
Ground................................Black
Brake..................................Red\Black
Right Turn............................Green\Yellow
Left Turn.............................Green\Black
Park\Tail..............................Red\White

Also, get yourself one of those 12v testers that look like a screw driver with a light bulb in the handle. They run about $4 at Wal Mart or Auto Zone and are invaluable. Speeds the whole wire identification process.

Good luck.

i spliced in the trunk under the back padded wall. the kit i had came with a converter, which had the 5 wires that i spliced into the tail lights, and it converted it to the 4 wire plug. Then i got an extension 5ft i think, and i ran it under the carpet in the trunk from the converter provided through a whole i drilled in the rear of the spare tire pan with a grommet and i just used a ziptie to the side of the receiver tube on the hitch itself. as for the wire locations, the converter provided is marked for which wires to splice to the 5wire side of the converter. the tester really helps with identifying your wires. dont have to much fun with this .
