Bumping an old thread here. I've thought of putting HID's in the high beams for awhile now and with the price point hitting $25.00 for a kit, I'm really giving it serious consideration. Now I've already read the comments in this thread and most people seem to think HID's won't last as long in high beam use because of the limited amount of time they're on. I couldn't care less about this because of the ultra low price now. They also say it wasn't worth it for the $100 it took to make this happen back then, but with prices at a quarter of that now, this changes things.

I do a fair amount of driving on pitch black roads with little traffic so I would get more than enough use to justify the cost on this. I'm going for a 55 watt kit and I'd like to see some comparison pictures (stock to 55 watt HID) if possible.

Wow! I never knew about them bulbs! Just looked into them. 2500 lumens which is a lot.

Just looked into the 9011 bulbs. You can get them for $25 shipped for each bulb (Amazon) and they just about double the output of the stock 9005 bulbs.

With a 55W HID kit, you might melt the housings if they're on for a long period of time. For the extra 40% brightness, it probably isn't worth it.

did you mean 3k? im considering doing this, but i'm still trying to decide between 4300k HID or just some high powered halogens. either way, i use my high beams for extended periods of time on very hilly, 2 lane roads. plus warm up is really only like 3-5 seconds

If you have 30,000K then the output must be terrible, even at 55W. There also aren't 100W HIDs, the most I've seen are 70W and they're quite rare and expensive. At that point bulb life would be terrible and probably way too hot to run for long periods of time.

If you want the 3000k look in your high beams, just order some yellow 55w bulbs off of eBay.

$9 got me a pair, and they work just fine.

Wow that's good to know. Maybe just steer clear of threads with titles with words to the effect of "HID high beams" etc.

The stock halogen bulbs are 60 watts. I'll take my chances with HID bulbs that are 5 watts lower than stock.

Ok, anyone with some actual pictures or useful info please.

Here's a fun fact: 35w HIDs produce more light than 60 watt halogen bulbs because of the way they emit light. Trust me, I've had 55w halogen bulbs in my fogs...my 35w HIDs are much, much brighter.

If someone is dead-set on HIDs in their high beams, a 35w kit would be perfectly acceptable. 55w kits are actually just 35w bulbs that are over-driven by a more powerful ballast, which means shorter lifespan. Also more unnecessary heat output.
