How to tell if the slow 2-3 shifts are from tranny? or valve body

Thats pretty much my question. I've read around that when trying to race with an auto its a slooow shift from 1-2, but when i drive normally i have a 2-3 slow shift and after it shifts it hits the 3rd gear just a tad harder and when into 4 its quick and smooth.

my old 2002 maxima didnt do this but just had the slow 1-2 shift when i floored it.

how can i tell if its the tranny or the valve body? and will the valve body mod fix this?

Thanks!!

If the tranny slips on the 2-3 upshift when cold but perfect once fully warmed up, odds are it is the valve body. A shift kit (which modifies the valve body) should fix that and make all shifts firmer and faster.

I just purchased my '02 (private sale) and have the same problem. I have spent the last 3 days trying to figure out the best fix. Had the flush done at the dealer last week, previous owner was on top of maint. and I read all his records. Fluid looked good, not burnt at all when changed. Mr Transmission wanted to take it apart for 700.00 plus what ever they find. Every other shift is perfect, just this slow 2-3. I drove it hard on the test drive and of course it was fine, just under normal driving conditions, it drives me crazy. The car is fantastic in every other way and has 135,000 kilometers on it. I need help!

When the car is fully warmed up, how does it shift? Down here in the Dallas area, it takes about 2-3 miles of driving in 30 degree weather (I guess that is -1 C) for the transmission to warm up enough to tighten up the 2-3 shift. Up in your neck of the woods, it will probably take longer to warm up due to the colder temperatures.

FWIW, my car had 113,897 miles on it when I bought it and I noticed the cold weather 2-3 slow or slightly slipping upshift. I now have 144,150 (or so) miles on my car and despite doing nothing, the problem isn't getting worse. I've got 60,000 miles more on my transmission that you do on yours and it still shifts great once it fully warms up. Whether or not the slip will reduce longevity of the clutch packs I guess depends on what Nissan considers to be the normal lifespan on the transmission. Typically, an automatic transmission with regular fluid changes will last around 200,000 miles before requiring a rebuild.

My solution right now is to slightly lift off the gas right before the 2-3 upshift to prevent any slip. Long term solutions are the Transgo Shift Kit or a new vavle body, which costs about 10x the price of the shift kit with about the same installation cost.

The estimated time to install the shift kit is 3 hours plus you will need several quarts of ATF. I'd call around for a transmission shop that has experience installing shift kits. Expect them to charge $75-100 an hour labor.

Still be cheaper than $1200 for just the vavle body itself from Nissan and you'd get quicker, firmer shifts.

so this is an actual shift kit? not changing the valve body? so if i send the valve body to level 10 or something and have them do their thing on it... isnt that the same? or no?

Shift kits modify the valve body.
