Dropped off the car today (Header and Spacer Install)

Well, I took it to a fairly local shop around me called PSI Motorsports. Gave them all the parts and went over what I wanted done - headers, spacers, motor mounts, and subframe bushings, VAFC install and tune. I already have a 2.5" custom exhaust, test pipe, NWP block off plate, 2* timing advance (actually 3* cause when I took it in, it was at 14*... odd) and the GAB mod. They dyno'd it and the best of 3 pulls was 230hp/220tq. Numbers seem good to me, what do you guys think?

They also tell me they might be done with it tonight and they want to be cause they're packed the rest of the week. I am going to a concert tonight, so I won't be able to get it, but I just can't wait for tomorrow! I think 260whp is achievable with a good tune.

I also got a clip (finally!) of my exhaust setup before this install so I can compare it. I will post that up tomorrow as well, I left my damn camera in the car. I'll update as soon as I get more info.

EDIT: Also, he only ran the car up to like 6200 RPM because he said the motor is done making power by than. I was hoping he would run it all the way up so I can see if the headers are doing anything all the way up there.

I'm sure it's too late now, but I would've told him I want a full pull.

mist max2000 Apr 1, 2009 10:03 AM

so how much are they charging you for all that? seems like alot of work.. also what state?

viperboy Apr 1, 2009 02:25 PM

Unfortunately, it was too late to tell him to do a full pull. Didn't wanna irritate the dude tuning my car haha

And its $1275 out the door. Seems steep, but you pay to play and I'll have it back tomorrow.

As many as it takes to get it tuned correctly.

l3ftonm3 Apr 1, 2009 07:37 PM

260whp I think will be out of reach. I'd say 245-255. But I suppose we will know tomorrow. Still have a few mods you can still do though to push it higher.

HOLY :wtf:

viperboy Apr 1, 2009 07:49 PM

What other mods could I do?

And it was a little expensive but I didn't have much of a choice.

e-subliminal-2 Apr 1, 2009 07:55 PM

Why not do everything yourself and save yourself some money?
Just my 0.2..
1300 is ALOT of money.. minus the tune of course.

viperboy Apr 1, 2009 07:58 PM

The tune and VAFC install was about $500 of that. And I would do it myself, but it's my daily, I don't have the tools or the workplace or the know-how to do it. This is my only choice, the car is in there on my 2 days off.

tookrzy4u192 Apr 1, 2009 08:04 PM

dang thats a lot of money.. but atleast your car will be pulling hard after everything is done :) you could get a y-pipe?

a y-pipe for his headers?

viperboy Apr 1, 2009 08:10 PM

Y-pipe was part of the header combo :)

allblackmax96 Apr 1, 2009 08:24 PM

what kind of headers did you have installed?

would have been nice if he pulled to redline, with the block off plate you should get better numbers up top

to me those number seem alittle low for a 6mt with a vafc tune, plenty of other 5.5 gens with the same mods are putting down better numbers. maybe you could get more out of the vafc.....

viperboy Apr 1, 2009 08:28 PM

OBX headers and y-pipe. And these were the numbers before the headers, y-pipe, vafc, and tune. I'll get those numbers tomorrow.

DIY FTW

BUT now if something goes wrong or if something isn't right you can take it back and make them fix it.

Nice, can't wait to see the numbers.
Are you in Alabama? There is a PSI Motorsports a couple miles from my house.

Oh yeah, you better believe it. It was encouraging though that the guy said in the 7 years he's been doing this, no one has had to come back because of his tune.

haha just re-read his mod list and noticed he had headers.. my baddd.. ignore my previous post

HotshotVQ35 Apr 2, 2009 11:20 AM

in for some numbers..

Puppetmaster Apr 2, 2009 11:30 AM

He's charging you $1275 and he doesn't know to run the dyno to redline? Isn't the point of a dyno to see how the power curve is throughout the RPM range? Is he not going to adjust your AF past 6200 as well since it "doesn't make power there"? Just because it isn't making power past there doesn't mean you shouldn't take it up there, how else will you know how it is behaving past the peak power point. He should know its more about area under the curve than peak numbers.

Only if it's a problem with the actual installation.

If the parts go wrong, too bad, so sad.

Stormzusmc Apr 2, 2009 03:37 PM

When I got my spacers installed the shop used to much RTV and caused a slow start up when the car was off for a little bit, but would fire right up after installation. This has nothing to do with the spacers from Aaron, he was more then willing to help me out and deal with the shop that put them on. After describing what happened he talked to the shop and they reinstalled them for free and they used an anaerobic sealant instead of the RTV (the RTV is just easier to find). Then the car ran just fine. Anyway I think jobs like that a proffesional install wouldnt be a bad idea if you either dont have time or the know how to do this. All in all I got it squared away and glad that I paid to install them

MaximusMorpheus Apr 2, 2009 04:23 PM

I am curious to see the vids, as well as the numbers from this work being done.

We should be hearing something shortly....

i don't think 260 hp is out of reach... especially since he's at 230 now.. the headers and y add maybe 20hp well cattman's do, i don't know about obx... we'll say 15 to be safe) so 15 hp from the headers +10 from the spacers, + 10-15 from the tune... conservatively, that's 35 extra horsepower, which would put him at 265.. i think you'll hit 260 if you're already at 230 now

skidz88 Apr 2, 2009 05:55 PM

I don't think $1275 is that bad.

Cost me $2300 to have Cattman headers on my car...and I've yet to install my EB and tune it.

Yup. Cattman headers after int'l customs, shipping, brokerage fees, and conversion to Canadian currency was just over $1600, install was $800(CDN $). So actually it was $2400 lol.

All said and done I will be over the $3000 mark once I'm dyno tuned.

Is that Canadian? If so, I wonder what the exchange rate was at the time.

Spacers dont add anything to peak power only midrange. The OBX headers are making close if not the same gains as cattman after tuning. Not may members here in the 260's with similar mods, he should be very happen if he makes mid 250.

viperboy Apr 2, 2009 07:08 PM

Well, not as much as I hoped, but I'm happy with how it drives but I just wish the numbers were a little higher lol 242hp, he tuned it pretty conservatively. I totally forget the torque numbers now but I have the graph. They used a wideband when they tuned it too.

But... The car sounds like a honda at certain rpms. :( I think its from the test pipe but it is wayyy too raspy. Would a cat or high flow cat make that go away or should I just get a larger magnaflow resonator, or maybe both???

I wanna fix this asap, and the car needs to get quieted down too lol

242 seems a little low to me bro...

sucks that its not what you wanted but its still pretty decent
