6mt randomly getting hard to get in gear??

So i got the car about 3 days ago. The car drives fine and gets into gear fine...sometimes.. Last night i was trying to quickly take off a light to make a right turn before on coming traffic and i randomly stalled, i looked down and noticed i was in third. I tried getting into first or second and it was MUCH harder than usual.

Usually you can freely (with the stick in nuetral) move the gear about2-3 inches easily with one finger left or right. About once or twice a day it gets extremely hard and i basically lose a good 1.5in-2.5 inches of ONLY moving it into first and second gear. It still goes in with-out grinding or feeling like its gonna pop out but its an EXTREME difference, almost like the car only wants to start in 3rd. It's not like the car wont go into 1st of second, it just gets extremely hard to even move it left from neutral to even get it near first or second. 2 minutes later it returns to normal...

Change gear fluid? mt90? Anyone had any experience with this?

some of my older cars have had similar issues about not wanting to go into 1st or second, but never with the shifter not wanting to go left... again, with the older cars, i rolled the car forward a couple inches in third then put it in first. i know its not a fix, but it worked. check all your fluids tho, if you're low on clutch fluid as HotshotVQ35 said, it will cause this as well.

If you just got the car, switch the gear oil to be safe.
There are only 3 maybe 4 oils that are gl-4 and safe to use on the 6mt.

The dealers will put in mobil1(as will the general public), which is gl-5 rated and will eat the synchros.

Try Amsoil, redline, or my personal fave Motul 75w85.

I noticed the difference, especially on the 3rd gear crunch.
But first be sure to check the clutch fluid as stated above

I'm planning on doing a tune up and gear fluid change in about a month. I got the 3rd gear crunch but it's not bad. Only felt if im going 5k plus and shift hard into third. I'll recheck gear fluid in the morning. Thnx for the help.

Use mt-90 for fluid. This is really smooth. 1st and second can be tough to shift into/put in gear. I would never shift into first... even if you're rolling somewhat slow. Very tough for the car to grab or go into 1st like this I think, so I never shift/go in gear unless stopped. Don't know if this helps but put in some MT-90, it's like $14 maybe less. It makes shifting 100 times smoother/un notchy

I agree with everyone abopve that you should change your fluid, however it shouldn't make any difference to the movement of the stick.

I would check the connections at the shifter and at the tranny. Maybe the rubber is getting worn out and is moving in and out of place.

It's probably a good time to change out the bushing to some ES bushings anyway.

Good luck.

+1 on checking out the bushings. They're known to fail and come apart. Check out the bushings in the car under the shift boot. There are also bushings where the cables connect to the tranny. The condition of those bushings will directly affect the movement of the shifter.

For the grinding I'd look at the master cylinder. If it's starting to fail it could work well sometimes and not disengage the clutch all the way at other times.
