Just a question out of curiousity...

Ok so this happened a good 2 months or so ago...but my transmission shot craps. Now my question is that on the day this happened I had installed the Free STS mod and changed my transmission fluid ...I wouldn't think either of these could cause this as many of people have done the Free STS (I loved it BTW!!!) and changing the fluid I wouldn't think could hurt anything...I put royal purple in it btw...so my question is do you guys just think this was a very strong coincidence or could maybe the Free STS could have put my 240,000 mile 6-speed to rest??? I have not put the STS back on the new transmission because I'd rather be safe than sorry so I haven't tested it out nor would I like to Just wanted to see what some of your guys opinions where...

What does 'shot craps' mean?

What exactly is wrong with the trans? What does it do/not do?

I was just driving it like normal (for real) and it wouldn't go into 2nd gear all of a sudden, and then I turned onto my street and then magically it went into 2nd (not forced in either) and then it started clunking like something had broke, at first I thought it was an axle or something but upon further inspection I knew that wasn't it so I drained the tranny fluid. Broke off several teeth...did not pull apart to check but there were chunks of the teeth coming out into the several different times I ran fluid though it, there were so many metal shavings it looked like a metallic based paint

Also, I put another 2002 6-speed back in it.

It could be the Royal Purple.

I dont know if they make a GL-4 fluid.

A gl-5 fluid will eat away at the brass materials in the trans, but I cant see how it could do it in one day.

Key note there is yellow metals. The gears aren't made out of brass. If they were, they'd have the torque holding capacity of jello.

OP: Changing the fluid doesn't cause teeth to fall off, neither does an STS mod. Driver error or pure bad luck.

But **** happens, been there:

sounds like bad luck and bad timing to me too.

On a side note, i am pretty sure the royal purple is rated as a gl-5 but i remember somebody posting something about how it doesn't have the same properties that cause other gl-5 lubricants to degrade the gears. I couldnt seem to find it though but i didnt search for too long.

amsoil and redline both make good synthetic gl-4 fluids

same thing happened to me on my 200SX about two years ago..except I don't know exactly what happened. It started popping out of gears while I was away in pennsylvania and then it seized up. When I got it back to my house eventually, I yanked it out and tore it down. Turns out the bearing retainer on the case broke somehow and caused the mainshaft to jump all over. Ended up having the same metallic paint that you did I'm sure haha. All the pieces from the gears caused the shifter to bind up and that was the end of that. Worst smell ever though.
