my air condition is only working on high now and not other settings. also my check engine light just came on. i was thinking resistor box but i'm not sure. any ideas? i was told that the check engine light was from an electrical problem causing my coils to get low voltage. could this be the resistor under the hood. i'm getting desperate with this thing

 

in my infinity g20 this was a common problem. there is a resistor that limits current except at setting 4 if it is blown it will only work on setting 4. I am assuming it's the same on the maxima's it's like a $35 part and a 10 minute fix (5 if you already have the screwdriver handy).

From what i can gather it sounds like your code is from a bad coil misfire. There is a write-up somewhere here on how to test them to determine which one is the culprit. You may also want to post exactly what code it was, it is easier to help that way

 

if your manual climate control only works on number 4 that means only one thing your blower motor resistor is bad, this resistor is located at the bottom of the blower motor housing which is located behind the glove compartment. It a flat black or brown looking resistor.
