I would try the locksmith first. He should be able to tell if you need a new immobilizer.

Funny, i went to the dealer and asked them the same thing. They said it "rarely" happens. I gave them **** for playing me like an idiot.

cost me 55$ and 5 minutes for them to unlock the car. Didnt even program anything.

lets just say i wrote a angry email to nissan usa.

Im so pissed ,today I was driving the max and the check engine turned on again. I got home and check the codes (with out turning off the car) and there u go again the famous p1610,p1612. I deleted them then I turn off and on the car with no problems I dont wanna have to carry the obdII every time this code pops up. Any one else ever had this problem?

Mega bump...mine acted up on me this morning. Made me miss HellaFlush . Ill pull the codes and see what happens. So far tried ecu unlock...nada.

I should mention that I washed the car this morning and had the key in my pocket. It did partially get wet. But it still started up and I was able to get home. Took a shower and as I was leaving for HellaFlush, car idled for two secs and cut off. Thought it was my IACV giving me a cold start at first. Turned it over again and gave it gas but cutoff right after. So, after trying again, turns but doesnt catch. Immediately thought immobilizer and yes, security is solid red.

Ive seen mixed psts....some say a locksmith can fix while some say at the stealership only....any thoughts?

I'm getting these same two codes but no red security light. Car turns but wont catch. When using the OBDII it also wont let me erase the p1610 code. But it will erase the p1612. Which then comes back on after trying to start it up a few times. Is this a key reprogramming issue only??

According to the fsm, code P1610 is
LOCK MODE
NATS MALFUNCTION
P1610
When the starting operation is carried out five or more
times consecutively under the following conditions,
NVIS (NATS) will shift the mode to one which prevents
the engine from being started.
*Unregistered ignition key is used.
*IMMU or ECM’s malfunctioning.

The solution to it is to try what the fsm says,

ESCAPE FROM LOCK MODE
1. Turn ignition switch OFF.
2. Turn ignition switch ON with registered key. (Do not start engine.) Wait 5 seconds.
3. Return the key to OFF position.
4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 twice (total of three cycles).
5. Start the engine.

when i had this issue, i had my car towed to nissan to have a immobilizer module installed. Its one of the dumbest things to go wrong and its not cheap to replace because they charge for part, installation and reprogramming! Im still pissed about it!

I got mine reprogrammed for free since it was under warranty. He did notice a few error codes so he cleared em. He failed to do it 3weeks ago when he did it the first time. Hoping this solves it.

Im working a 5th gen and same thing P1610 p1612. Im disgusted to see Nissan has gone to straight ****!!! Maxima, Altimas, Quests 3.5 automatic have bad transmissions from 2002 to I don't know what year, I want to say from 02-05 or 06. OOH and by the way the valve bodies are $1000.00 that does not include the clutches, seals, steels, torque converter nor the oil for it!!!!! Then the 4 cylinder Altima engines from 2002-2006 are a POS. The vehicle misfires and has no signs of a blown headgasket and it is a blown gasket. Also that wireless throttle another POS invention. We now have china building every electronic components and I don't want to say they are the cause of the electronic failure but geez what has happened???? The Maxima was a beast from 99 and below. Im not up to date with the newer generations but I hope they have improved. One more thing I forgot to mention the 350Zs and G35s had bad trannies too. Manual transmission issues. The tranny made a weird noise and they were swapping them out like hotcakes at the dealership. Manual transmissions are all made out of steel gears inside right? Well they had a bad design flaw as well. Don't know if that has been repaired!! Also the 3.5 engines unlike the 3.0 VQs the chain tensioners give damaging the engine!! I have not seen many of these repairs but they do.
