Slow front windows!

Man, considering all I've replaced the past three weeks on this car I hope this isn't something serious.

The two front windows get slow on occasion, but yesterday the drivers side simply refused to go up. It had rained that day so the gasket was wet if that means anything. It did eventually go up after a few button pulls.

same thing with my roomates max man it does the exact same thing, does it make a shreaking noise when it tries to go up??? Sometimes its the rubber between the windows is flipped over and it slows it down.

Yeah happens to me also (also on both windows). Does get annoying at times. +1, that it has something to do w/ the rubber. Fixed it once then, it went back to messing up. Haven't found (or tried for that matter...) to find a permanent fix.

Would be great if someone has a fix for this.

My car does this too. I think I have figured out the problem. Cleaning them helps, but I have noticed that the windows are loose. When raising the driver's side window on auto, grab the window as it goes up and pull it towards the B-Pillar while assisting it up. Mine tend to move back about half way up then seem to move more freely. I think the glass is lose from the frame within the door. Since I have dynamatted the doors, I have been putting off taking the doors apart to check for myself.

I had something similar happen with my driver side window. It was making noise going up, and going slower and slower over the last year or so. At times it would get stuck, and the only way to get it to go up was to hit the door while holding the up button.

The metal track part of the window regulator ended up rusting up. It made the it hard for the window to slide on it freely. This put more strain on the motor. With the motor on its last breaths, I replaced it with a rebuilt motor from NAPA. I also cleaned the regulator from rust a bit, and re-greased it with white lithium grease (in a spray can). Now it works great again. I took some pictures doing it... might post them soon.

The track looks like a large 'X' when the window is all the way up.

PLEASE POST YOUR PICS! My car has had this problem for the last 2 years. Last winter (I live in the north east), I never rolled down the windows (even to pay a toll, etc) because I really thought that they would get stuck!

I assume you had to pop the door panel off?

Yup, not that difficult.
IIRC:
1) Remove screw from door handle/pocket well
2) Remove screw near upper front of door panel - towards door jam
3) Carefully pop out entire window switch trim and disconnect the harness(s)
4) Pop off trim around door lock/handle release

NO LUBE! you will have a major mess! use some soapy water to take care of the squeaking windows.

if you put some lube on the seal you will have greasy windows every time you roll it down and up and it will be that way until you take the door apart and clean it all out.

Mine are getting slow on the '98. Will try the soap trick. The '03 has always been slower than the '98, but has never changes speeds from when it was new.

used to happen to my front windows...got worse in the winter or any cold weather

I finally cleaned out the track, sprayed some liquid silicone (do NOT use WD40 as it'll attract more dirt), and the windows started rolling up like new.

If that doesn't solve it the window switch may need to be replaced.

If you need to remove the door panel for one reason or another here are some good instructions. They helped me when I was replacing my speakers.

Thanks very much for the direction. I'm doing both front doors tomorrow!

that's not entirely true. if you grease just the side rails NOT the horizontal rubber gasket, you won't have any problems.

I use regular grease and a small bush and applied it into the vertical channels. Wiped off the access grease with a towel and rolled the glass up and down a few times. Now they work like new.

Mine goes up and down fine but when I hit the drivers side auto up button the window closes then opens up about a 1/4 way down.I tried closing it automatically again several times with the same result, but if I hold the butten to the up position it closes fine.I wonder if something is obstructing the window or is this some electrical issue???

Alright then --- I popped the door panel off and through the top of the door I can see a metal guide (roughly in the center of the door) that a plastic follower straddles as the window rolls up and down. I could only access the top of the guide so I sprayed some white lithium grease on it and worked the window up and down. Sprayed and rolled several times. Put everything together and now it's worse. What else needs top be lubed? How do you get to it. Do I need to strip off the moisture barrier?

IMO most of the resistance occurs on the metal track of the window regulator ("the metal guide" as you call it). I doubt lubricating the rubber parts or the sides of the window will make much of a difference. In my case the track was rusted up a bit, so i think that's why the window wasn't gliding on smoothly. I think spraying that down is the most you can do without pulling out the regulator.

Has anyone tried moving the glass how I described in my previous post?

http://forums.maxima.org/7219082-post5.html

I have a feeling that this "play" in the glass is causing the slow windows.

mine does the same thing, ive noticed that if you grab the window at the front and push it to the rear of the door the binding stops. almost like the glass is loose on the tracks.

I'll pull the door panel and soak the track with more lithium grease. I have read a couple of threads where folks have accidentally waxed the rubber window parts and gained good results. I'll plan a dual pronged attack for this weekend!

Hi guys, I have problem with rubber when window goes down it jams rubber from inside and doesn't want to go more, so I have to open up window and try again. today I open my door and tried to clean rubber and window from inside but it became worse. do you know where I can buy a new rubber (it's not just a rubber it also has some mounting and soft material) and what is exact name of that part? thanks

Are you talking about the moulding?

I'm guessing that something like that you'd have to get from the dealer... but I could be wrong.

For those with slow windows, have you tried to realign the for and aft tracks (listed as front and rear sash)?

I had a similar problem in another car where the track wore/moved and allowed the window to rock fore and aft as it moved up/down. I've noticed my Maxima exhibiting the same symptoms, but haven't been motivated enough to do anything about it.

My fix

I had the same problem with my passenger window, its was really slow and sometimes didn't go up at all. I had decided to eventually just replace the window motor but a couple weeks ago they(all my windows) started working like new. The only thing I did at the time that could explain it was a very simple ground kit (battery neg to frame, frame to motor). Could just be coincidence but I personally dont think so. Someone else should try, it may be a fix for some of us .
