Removing dust shields?

My friend is installing new rotors and pads on my 03 max, and my rear dust shield look really rusty. Is it recommended to remove them or should I keep them on??? Any benefits with them on?

I painted mine black and kept them on. I see it as useful somewhat to protect the rotor somehow iono. lol

Don't sacrifice a part's intended use simply for aesthetics! If it looks bad, make it look good, but I wouldn't remove it altogether.
