look what i bought today
From what I understand, Nissan doesn't part out the HLSD pedals for the Maxima. (That's a familiar theme, BTW. Nissan's parts system is somewhat less than perfect.) However, these HLSD pedals happen to be the exact same ones used on the 350Z, for about $20 a piece.
I wasn't kidding when I said I would be buying them shortly. They look pretty cool, and people claim they feel better underfoot.
Hotshot, you should tell him how to definitively figure out whether or not his car has HLSD, or if someone just threw on some HLSD pedals. I think there's some indicator under the hood or on the firewall or something.
I believe it's if the last letter on your vin on the fire wall ends in an H than it's a hlsd tranny,
ftw stands for "for the win".
And hlsd basically lets both wheels receive power to spin, better traction. Something MUCH needed in EVERY 6mt maxima...

See, I always thought FTW stood for "Free the Whales!" It's so much more entertaining, and far less gameboy geeky.
I imagine HLSD is rather like heated seats. If you've never had it, you're not missing anything. Of course, once you get heated seats, it becomes a necessity.
And yes, Hotshot, I'm sure your ride has heated seats, too.

Nice find. I got myself back into a Maxima yesterday. I bought an 03 GLE new, majestic blue. Traded her for an Infiniti FX35 in 2006. Yesterday bought 03 SE sunlit sand, 90k for $7k. I still miss that blue one. Stupid me.

The 5.5 6MT has a design flaw in the 3rd gear syncros, affecting a significant percentage of the cars made those 2 years. For some it's worse than others, although the majority of 5.5 6MT's don't have the problem. It's affectionately (?) referred to as the "third gear crunch".
A number of people have replaced their manual transmission with the updated tranny from '04-'06. From what I understand, it's a direct replacement.
You'll find out about the third gear crunch... either by research, or first-hand experience. Good luck.

And chalk me in with the "had it worse than others" crowd. The tranny swap was SO worth it in the end, however. I didn't just take care of the "crunch," I also upgraded to an HLSD and a 4.1 final drive, as opposed to the stock 3.8.
It bolts right in as a direct replacement. No sort of modification needed. That is, unless my buddy whose shop did the swap forgot to tell me something.

However, WOT and red-line... that's a different matter entirely. Under those conditions I have a 90% likelihood that 3rd gear will be a brick wall. Used to think the problem was me. It's not me.
I don't track or street race (well, very rarely), so it's not really a problem. If I were younger, or tracked the car, it would be a priority.
You can research the swap. I believe a replacement tranny would run between $1500 and $2500, shipped and installed. That's a lot of money for a 7 year old car.

Yeah, that's a shame. Mine crunches very lightly about 40% of the time. With experience, you learn the subtleties on how to drive with it, and it becomes a non-issue. Here's another way to look at it: for the 5 years that my car was under new-car warranty, it never occurred to me to complain.

Um, I don't know. Thought about it a number of times, but never enough to chase down an answer. Research the problem, start a thread, ask your dealership, ask a tranny shop... all good ideas.

Now that I think of it, the 6th gen 6MT is a bolt-on replacement, but the internals are probably redesigned. So unless Nissan fixed the syncro design in the 5.5 gen tranny for their parts supply chain, you probably can't just bolt on 6th gen internal parts.
We need a tranny expert to weigh on on that question. I don't fix 'em, I just drive 'em.

Yep. Redline MT-90. Your local nissan shop probably uses it, if you ask them. Mine did the fluid swap a while ago for 1/2 hour labor and the cost of the tranny oil.

As I recall - Redline MT-90 is NOT GL-4 rated tranny fluid.
Amsoil now makes a fully synthetic GL-4 version - I recommend you use THAT instead.
Btw -- Get the All-Weather, Rubber, Nissan Floormats! Set of 4 for $50.00.
They don't get dirty, and they don't wear-out.

...Could be worse, it could be auto lol.
But I have an HLSD.
From a 2004 Maxima.
