It's a belt of the left hand side, right below the power steering back up bottle, any idea what this belt is? The car still drives but I don't want to drive the car until I get the belt fixed..

Brake light also came on.

Brake system = no correlation to belts

Your car only has two belts. Get a new mechanic.

The 3rd is what the mechanic beats him with over the counter.

LOL, real funny bro...

He said I can get the belts from discount auto parts and drive the car to his house which is something I'm not gonna risk.

Yeah, I wouldn't drive it. If your car is only running off the battery, weird things might start happening once the voltage drops.

I should know since I have a 2002, but if the water pump is belt driven (no idea if it is) you don't want to be driving the car around.

Scott you lose your Alternator belt...And maybe the third belt that your mechanic is telling you is the one from the A/C compressor!!!...You are supposed to have Power Steering Pump Belt, A/C belt, and the Alternator Belt...Last one is the one that you lose because all the lights just turn on in your panel (brake, oil, battery), this is supposed to happen in the panel, just a warning that you lose your Electric Power (Alternator) Anyways, after 100,000 miles you should make a tune-up to your car changing the belts, water pump, timing belt or chain, etc...I hope this info help you!!

Here is a picture from my Cell Phone, you see that the belt is popped.

I bought the Power Steering belt also, hopefully I won't have to change it yet.

Yes, if you're handy and have the right tools. Some of the bolts are tricky to get to and tighten and loosen. There's a good guide out there somewhere, but I can't find it right now.

Sounds like your alternator belt to me...and unless you want your car to completely shut off in the middle of traffic I'd suggest you not drive it until it's fixed. (speaking from experience)

Fully charge the battery and drive in the daytime so you don't use any lights. I think the battery will last a considerable amount of time.
Have someone follow you with a battery if you're worried about getting stuck.

Maybe this will help if you decide to do the belt replacement yourself.

its all relative to voltage drop. the cluster does all sorts of funny things when the alternator dies and the battery takes over and starts to lose voltage. (trust me, i know)

Scott, something similar happened to me earlier this week. Expressway driving and suddenly my battery and brake light came on. I googled the reason and it was attributed to the alternator. When I got home I saw that my alternator belt was hanging loose...long story short is that I was able to get about 10 miles out of the car on battery power before it died.
The reason my belt came off was a loose nut on the idle pulley..that had to be replaced and belt reinstall. Everything was good after that. It cost about 1 hour of labor for me..and my mechanics rate is 75 an hour...
hope this helps, but DO NOT drive anymore on your car...get it towed if necessary. If you are in NYC, I can recommend him to you.

I once drove 32 miles (mostly freeway) home after my crankshaft pulley came apart on my 626. Battery still had 11 volts and the car would still start.

I did turn the radio and a/c off.
