Start sound - getting worse

Since late summer (around 80 degrees Fahrenheit) the car has been starting odd. When you turn the key, it turns on normally, but it gets really loud and sometime the RPMs rise above 2000. This may not be abnormal, but it doesn't sound like a car should. Multiple people have asked why the car makes the noise. It would only make this noise when it was not warmed up (fall and winter).

However, now, even after driving the car from 2 minutes, 20 minutes, or two hours, the car still makes the noise every time you turn it on. And sometimes, it seems like the car may be a little more hesitant to start because the RPM gauge will raise, drop, raise higher, drop lower, then be at around 700rpms.

This definitely is not normal, what is making this noise?

I don't have speakers here on my work computer, but if it's a loud clattering, that's the timing sprocket. It's normal on older VQ's.

Mine does it quite a bit as well, and oftentimes, if I leave it sitting for about 5-10 minutes after I've driven, it'll do it again when I start as a result of the oil draining back into the pan.

Check your oil level, and also give your car 10 seconds or so when you start it to let the oil work its way into the sprocket.

I gave youtube a search and a VQ35 from a sixth gen Maxima came up that had a timing chain tensioner issue, and I heard the 'clattering' sound you were talking about. This is not what it sounds like, however. It's a loud, almost high pitched noise that sounds like it's 'catching' onto something. I don't really know how to describe it, almost as if you're car is high in RPMs, won't shift, and has a constant sound at that RPM, then it finally shifts is the only way I can think of on how to describe it.

I'll give the video a listen when I get home. I don't even have a set of earphones to use here.

Almost sounds like your starter is staying engauged after the engine starts.

Or possibly a malfunction in the transphasic inducer on the primary plasma manifold... What do you think, spock?

Starter is sticking. Mine was doing the same thing. I replaced the starter and I've never heard it again.

I agree, sounds like the starter. Had to replace mine just recently on my 2000 I30 with 71K miles. At first it would pause during the start and then it was making a grinding noise. Like yours, but not as long in duration. All has been normal since the new starter went in.

Thanks all, that is actually the way I described it to everyone who asked. "I think the starter is sticking or catching onto something." Is the starter a do it yourself project or a bring it into the shop?

I agree with the others, sounds like the bendix gear on the starter isn't pulling back in quickly enough.

Thanks for your input.

Off topic, but the black tails really look good on your car. And have you gotten a chance to get your car fixed since it was backed into?
