Brake failure

Friend of mine coming to intersection presses the pedal it goes to the floor - no brakes. He wasn't going fast so he used the ebrake so everybody is happy. The reason for all the trouble - his pass side brake line bursted and he lost a lot of brake fluid. The reason for that is rather interesting but OT. The question - how come? Isn't the brake system on the modern cars supposed to 'survive' this kind of condition providing at least limited performance? According to him pumping pedal didn't help at all so he had no brakes - at least ebrake was much more efficient. The car is XTerra 2006 but the concept should be the same. I wonder if anyone had their line busted on Maxima and how did it go?

Wear and tear. Also possible a piece of debris caught the line and caused damage to it. But most likely, the line suffered normal wear and tear from suspension movment which lead to to its failure. Not common but it does happen. Once a leak is sprung like that all pressure is lost during the time the peddle is depressed.

I know the reason for that- some mf mechanic put that brake line in the wrong position and it was rubbing CV boot ribs. Wear & tear eh? Anyway, the question is not why but rather - isn't it supposed to still provide some braking in case 1 line is busted? What is the point in having 4- channel hydraulic system with 2 lines coming out of master cylinder and going into ABS actuator if it is useless in such case? I was wondering if Maxima behaves the same way.
