Auxiliary Port

does the fifth gen Maxima come with an Auxiliary port for hooking up stuff like ipods or is there an easy way to add one if it doesn't have it?

No it doesn't come with it. You would need to get a new/different head unit.

Link to picture seems to be broken but to sum it up, is it just an rca to 3.5mm headphone jack?

in a way yes, but that setup there will eliminate the CD changer in back and convert it to your Ipod through your stock bose headunit.

I use the drive and play by harmon. you could control your ipod and everything from a little screen. its really cheap now since they came out with the drive and play 2 (color LCD)

I just found that product by browsing through some of the old forum posts. It looks pretty sweet.

The cost to buy the parts necessary to be able to use an iPod with the stock headunit, cost almost as much to buy a new one. The stock Clarion (read Bose) one is not that great to start with anyway.

For example, http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/PU...ers/DEH-2200UB

The problem is, the Maxima I am going to buy has a navigation system built in, so buying a 130 dollar deck doesn't make sense. Not to mention I remember having to replace all my bose speakers in the past when upgrading to an after market deck. Do you agree or is the navigation system not as nice as it is cracked up to be? I don't know yet, I'm about to buy the car in 30 minutes.

The only reason I like the other one is because they claim you can control the ipod from the stock head unit. Though saving 100 bucks sounds pretty nice imo. Actually I'd be happy controlling the ipod from the ipod itself to save room. Can it be operated without the lcd?

No you don't have to replace the speakers.

The factory navi is not the greatest. It work, but there are other/better options out there. But that should be a deal breaker when buying the car.

Thanks, I see what you are talking about now. The stereo appears to be separate from the factory navigation system. The deal breaker in this case was the 6spd manual transmission with a 3.5Liter engine DDDD Anyway I just drove it home and the thing is very nice. I will open a new thread later with pictures and comments.

you can get an auxiliary port by putting in one of those tapes that has a cord

I have been doing it a while its pretty nice using old technology with new, luckly our 02 Bose's have a tape player if not we would all be outa luck.

Since you have the NAV in your max, does the audio deck have a CD changer button? If you do, the USAspec iPod adapter you linked to earlier might work. It doesn't work on all of the other 5.5gen headunits bc they typically have the 6cd changer built in to the unit. I have it in my 5.0 gen and I love it bc it keeps a stock look, charges my iPod, and I can control it through the stock headunit (also adds an auxillary RCA hookup for any other audio device you want to run through it). I think it would be worth the extra money over the drive&play IF it were to play nice with the NAV audio setup.

yeah if you just want to go forward and previous track, play/pause, and scan within a song you can use it w/out the screen i guess. Think about it though how can you actually control all the features on the ipod like menu, selecting playlist, selecting songs, artist, etc without a screen. Newer cars with color lcds yes that's easy. the play and drive is functional, cheap, reliable and not flashy or obnoxious. Everyone always asks me whats the **** for and they think it's a cool function to have in an older car. I put the **** right above the e brake and lcd in the bottom corner driver side.

not sure how the other one works in terms of accessing menus but i;d doubt it can do it unless it'll project on your NAV screen.
