SC Blowoff Valve Question...

For those people that have a Place-Racing CAI or any type of intake for that matter, that converts to a Supercharger, what can be done to compensate for the loss of cold air flow to the engine? If I understand the whole thing properly, and intake and a blowoff valve perform 2 different functions. Intake brings in cold air and the blowoff valve releases the hotter air...Is this right? Can someone who has an SC or someone who knows and Superchargers for the 5th gen explain the difference between blow-off valve and intake...thanx.

An intake sucks in air, hot or cold it doesn't matter. A blow off valve releases compressed air so that it (the air) won't go back to the blower when the throttle plate is closed.

So is this good or bad...Does the blow-off valve help with the flow of air just as good as a cai would?...

The CAI has nothing to do with the BOV. The BOV is used during a shift or at idle when the throttle is closed. It releases pressure that is built up in the SC intake tubing and prevents it from feeding back into the blower. The CAI is not used as part of the SC, but I guess you can hook it up to the SC intake tubing and suck in cooler air if you rigged it up somehow.

CAI = good
BOV = good

CAI is your intake, sort of like a the Pop Charger or Stillen Hi-flow.

The BOV releases the compressed air (totally different than an intake) so it doesn't surge back into your supercharger.

You asked me about doing a CAI in your PM. I did do a writeup a while back. Use that and Cheston's instructions on Maximadriver.com while doing the CAI.

Thanks for the info guys...Was afraid you had that SC-CAI thing patented or something. The information clears things up a bit for me...I had read a few things that said that after you get an SC, there is not as good a floww of air to the engine. Since the BOV replaces the CAI or intake, i was confused about how the engine would get proper /good air flow. Thanks for clearing in up.

Woah, who told you that?

Here's the thread you wanted... it was as easy as searching for "cai" with "y2kevse" in the "5th gen forum"

Isn't the purpose of the CAI to cool the air BEFORE it gets into the engine? Is that what this custom CAI is doing? or is the BOV just getting rid of hotter air after its already in the engine? We wnt to cool the air before it get to the engine dont we?

The CAI gets cool air before going into the supercharger. An intercooler will cool the air that exits the supercharger (before entering the engine).

A BOV will release compressed air (hot or cool it doesn't matter). The BOV is located before the engine.

If you want to cool the air before it goes into the engine, then you need an intercooler.

Hope Kev doesn't mind my hopping in here....

but...

a CAI simply brings in air from outside the engine compartment or a less hot area...it DOES NOT cool the air...

a BOV is like a safety pressure release OUTSIDE the engine itself...it prevents the build-up of pressurized air from destroying the SC or doing damage to the engine...it does not get rid of HOT air

they are completely differenet things and neither has anything to do with changing the temperature of the air or taking it out of anywhere...a CAI gets it in, a BOV keeps it from over pressurizing and releases the pressure...

Nope, I don't mind. The more help the better.

Yes, you are correct on your statements.
