Good luck, i love mine. the blackout has grown on me and i think it makes it look super aggressive. The leds at night are really bright. give the car somewhat of a classy look.

I would be careful with putting any LEDs inside the headlight housing. Heat from the headlights (esp. if you have HIDs) has been known to affect the reliability of LEDs. I have LED strips but I didnt put them in my headlights because I know its going to be a B*tch to open the lights up again when 1,2,3,4+ of the LED bulbs start blowing. Unless you got some specialist LEDs (not the made in china ebay crap) I would stay away from light inside the housing. I know a lot of guys on here have done the mod, but I am interested to see how long it will be before they have to tear apart the housing again to replace the LED strips.

03VIPMAX 02-18-2010 09:03 AM

im taking them out and redoing them not to happy

All things being subjective when it comes to appearance mods, my sense of aesthetics draws the line at the word "classy" when it comes to these LED strips, whether on a brand new Audi or an 8 year old Nissan.

Interesting, clean, creative, sharp, sparkly, unique, contemporary, rice-nice... all those. But not classy.

i think its classy on a new Audi...it flows with the lines on the car

but i agree thats classy isnt the right word to use when talk about these on a 8 year old Nissan

On the R8, I'll give you that. But not on the rest of their (unjustifiably expensive) model line.

Have you ever noticed that one side of an Audi's LED strip will turn off while its respective turn-signal is blinking? WTF? That implies some kind of safety consideration, I'm thinking.

didnt know that. that makes about as much sense as our fogs turning off with the high beams on

Good analogy. Equally confusing. :gotme:

To jeff5347... although I'm clearly not a fan of LED strips, your pictures show a well-crafted implementation. Good work.

03VIPMAX 02-18-2010 09:24 PM

yeah i dont know about classy maybe aggressive but not classy im kinda unsure wether i like em for sure im thinking about just taking them off and doing my taillights in leds instead...

They don't do it for me with the front end of our cars. The R8 makes it work because they fit into the design... Not the case with the Maxima.

x2. I think I saw one Maxima where they looked decent, but they were long enough to wrap around the entire bottom of the lamps.

03VIPMAX 02-19-2010 08:35 AM

true true its an odd shape

The reason is to make the front turn signals more conspicuous during the day. That "feature" can however be turned off by reprogramming the control modules on the car (I personally haven't done it yet on mine). Regarding LEDs in the housing, whatever Audi uses must be heat resistance as the LEDs are mounted directly next to the HID projectors. Any hardware used on a car must be designed for extremes in temperature. Chances are the ebay specials (primarily designed for indoor use) would fail even outside of the housings due to the extreme cycles of hot and cold in most climates.

03VIPMAX 02-19-2010 01:15 PM

the ones i got are for outdoor use and are waterproof

20th01 02-19-2010 02:41 PM

that looks awesome, but replacing the led's if they blow would suck

essential1 02-19-2010 03:07 PM

I like the audi headlight mod on audi.

Thats all.

IHAVEA2KMAXIMA 02-19-2010 03:38 PM

I think it all just depends on the headlight shape/space. The best lighting mod for 5.5 is the angel eyes. The LEDs look a little too weak to be DRL unlike the R8 which could be spotted faaaar away. I know that the LEDs are trending but it's just not working for 5.5 IMO.

I'm not even sure if I like them on the Audi....had one come behind me and the LEDs went off as he changed lanes to pass. Looked odd with left side on and the right off with the blinker flashing. Kinda like he just blew a fuse!

essential1 02-19-2010 06:30 PM

Best 5th gen headlight mod IMO was this one. Aggresive and clean.

Adios, Headlight Mod thread. Have fun, guys.

A shame indeed. The only thing it was missing was the 6 speed. And that was coming too.

nismomaxgtr18 02-19-2010 07:20 PM

lol Nowadays, you see everything from Toyota Tercels to Dodge Interpids with the "Audi headlight" mod. Jeff5347, thats probably the cleanest LED strip mod I have ever seen on a 5.5 gen.

i put the strip under the panel. if you look close in the pic you can see the red + wire. Im not gonna state for sure on this but i think it is shielded from the heat that the HD puts out. This was the 3rd time opening them.. First two were for the angel eyes and i scraped them for this mod and for the reason they quit working 2x. If these quit. No opening ill cut the wires and leave em off. Dont want to press my luck with the HD sealing.

Ive had the car since 05 and always waxed em along with the car. Last year i did my first clay bar and that did a good job too. My father owns a Mechanic/auto body shop so i used a buffer with their top quality polish as well. They look good in the pic but in person they arent as good. Once spring comes again they will get the treatment again. Thats one thing i cant stan is a nice car and crappy looking lights.

I tried that at first. GOt the 19" strips from Superbrightleds and they have a copper base. Not very receptive on conforming to dif shapes. So i cut them down and the have a slight curve.

The pic i took doesnt do the leds justice. I had them on today and it was fairly sunny. YOu def can see the leds. The leds are the same size as Audis, mine are tiny, prob 3mm SMT leds. I think i heard Audi uses 10mm leds. But you still can see the lights even in the sun. I was surprised.

03VIPMAX 02-20-2010 09:24 AM

wow that max with the projector IMO is efffin awesome i might do that instead lol jk thats to much work for a car thats 7yrs old. looks great. i did that to my 07 Si Sedan like 3 months after i got it. used the tsx projector but then the car was totalled like 6 months later. im just gonna take my leds off and do my taillight rings instead ill keep u guys posted on that!! i need to order new leds first ill probably just install these as my flood lights or somewhere under dash in my car or in engine bay.

nalc 02-20-2010 09:52 AM

audi doesn't use 10mm LEDs.... they use small SMD LEDs, but with reflectors. The LEDs are facing up, and then the wide reflectors point towards the front giving them that kinda rectangular look

I think I prefer angel eyes on the 5.5gen, though. It matches the shape of the headlight better.
