How many miles are on the car? Might be time for a rebuild?

Could be solenoids or the valve body/pump. Find a shop and demand they pull those parts and show them to you. You want to verbally confirm those parts to be replaced if they are trashed.

Next you should smell the transmission fluid, if it smells burnt (try to get a sniff of new transmission fluid as a baseline) that indicates more fun and hidden problems. Then you'll drop the transmission pan (you need a new transmission pan gasket and filter, it’s under $50 at any parts store) inspect the filter and magnets for metal junk. The transmission shop (or folks here, provided you get a great NON BLURY photo) can tell you if you need to get the transmission rebuilt.

Optional is buying a low mile used transmission and just swapping them. Keep an eye on your transmission fluid!

Spend a little time looking over the Automatic Transaxle fsm here http://www.mediafire.com/file/td2xjvejizj/AT.pdf and make some quick notes for when you call a couple of shops. Be warned it's VERY easy for them to agree, start the work and claim there is other faulty or failing parts. Do not let any work get done until you see the bad part next to the good part.

Get photos of everything.

Welcome, I wish ohhhh how I wish I stuck to my guns and knowledge BEFORE tossing $2,800 at a transmission shop. Worst part of it, nothing stops the shop from claiming whatever you complain about AFTER major work is "normal" until the warranty runs out and its rebuild the transmission all over again.

Hopefully someone here will reply who has detailed knowledge of automatic transmission repairs and can offer up specialized advice.

Car-parts.com... just buy a lower mileage transmission.... I just bought one with 79K for only $400 freighted with a 6months warranty.... I can buy 7 transmission for the price you pay to rebuild one.... not worth it IMO...
